Scratch is, in the most basic terms, a visual programming language that involves snapping blocks together to make games. It can be argued that this is nothing special- it's not like Scratch is the first of its kind, that only mindless coding existed before its creation. But Scratch is something different, too: a community. Long have others tried to make something like this, but none have succeeded. Sure, there are C++ forums where strangers can post inappropriate content for others to see; there are also the other visual languages, some of which have had their forums fall into oblivion and become the nesting grounds of attention-hungry trolls. But then there's Scratch.
Scratch is strange. It attracts everyone. Adults. Teenagers. Kids. Heck, I have a friend whose grandma is making games. Camps teach kids to program, schools encourage students to make games using Scratch.... it seems that everything is linked to it in some way or another.
So here is my message to newcomers: Use Scratch. Learn it. Teach it. Spread the word. It's the next big thing. And when you've mastered movement, try out velocity here. And once again, you'll be like a New Scratcher, just starting to learn how to program with Scratch. And when you've mastered that, spend hours trying to understand mesh, which lets you make games and play them with other people online. It's absolutely amazing.
Scratch isn't just for games, though: there are literally hundreds of art Galleries, art projects, and art contests that are worth checking out. RPGs dominate the Galleries section, and almost every RPG topic is covered, from warrior cats to fighting to everyday life. And for all you writers out there: there's no need to put away your pen to go on Scratch- there are writing projects, Galleries, and forums, too.
So what are you waiting for? Download it here. Join the fun!
By the way, here are some cool games, Galleries, and projects to check out:
GAMES
Space - very much like Shift, this great project makes a great time killer.
Cube Runner 3D - ignore the strange song, odd whispers, and red GAME OVER graphic, this under-recognized game is actually quite fun. A tune-up would be really good, though, because the game doesn't get harder as time goes on.
Steel Rain - wonderful graphics and scripting. Love the gameplay.
GALLERIES
Shootout RPG - an RPG Gallery. It utilizes the IM-Like qualities of all posts (they're instant, as long as you refresh the page) to create a RPG. Users post parts of stories and collaborate with each other, making a RPG (Role-Playing Game.)
Action and Adventure Games - what I call a "normal" Gallery. Games, stories, and other things are added by people to a theme.

Wow, nice way to put it, ZaRiTo, and surprisingly, after I read all of this, I feel moved! This will sure inform New Scratchers what they are working with-Scratch. Scratch on!!

Thanks a lot! All I want is for less arguing and spamming and just for New Scratchers to be able to grasp the true meaning of Scratch, not just the programming part.
(BTW, Read your smiley post, now I LOVE the smiley!)

By the way, the links to Scratch Wiki aren't working. They should be "http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Velocity" and "http://wiki.scratch.mit.edu/wiki/Mesh" (without the last "/"s).

Hit the report button. ITopics status usually requires Scratch Team approval first.

Aw, come on...... that can't be true! :3 Gotta give some love to all the other languages out there, too. C++ is a giant language, way more known than Scratch, it would just be strange if there were no good C++ communities.
But still, this is a very good post. It's so nice of you to write all that about our community. ^,^ You have my gratitude, mortal.
Now spread the cookies! ^^

XD I know. Still, I think Scratch is much better than C++! I mean, C++ may have more possibilities, but sometimes the forums can be VERY chaotic. I got attacked by an internet troll just for asking for help! But I guess you're right; just because I had a couple of bad experiences doesn't mean that I should apply a stereotype to all other forums. When I get the free time maybe I'll edit it.
