As I've looked around, I've found various Scratch competitions, and each time I've thought "shouldn't there be a place for this?"
I know Scratch is a happy place, and some people aren't that competitive, but hey, they can just stay away from there.
It would go something like this:
First, you would name the competition, something like "best _____ project"
Second, you would put in the criteria; the criteria would tell users what your project needs to win.
Third, you would set the dates. Due dates, the announcement date, things like that.
These the owner(s) would be able to change at any time. You should also be able to set a time along with that (like 4:30 EST Tuesday)
Then you would wait. once the due date (if applicable) was reached, no more projects would be accepted.
After that you would choose the winner. If you wanted to, you could have 2nd place and 3rd place. And if you really wanted to, you could have honorable mentions.
Then you would submit the winners, and the project link and picture would be shown on pedestals (okay, you can skip that part)
And maybe even below the Featured Galleries section you could have a "Featured Contests" sections, or a section for recently ending competitions.
I'd just like to see SOMETHING like this put into action.

I remember that there was a sort of competition a while back.
http://scratch.mit.edu/galleries/view/2821
Some mario game won and was featured. The gallery was featured for a good while as well.
I guess it would be cool to have another contest of sorts. The admins would probably play along with it like they did with the other contest I mentioned before.

Well, It might be better (for some) if this was put to work. I mean, it might just never really happen, but it's worth a try, to see how people respond.

hmmm.....a contest......perhaps a new section of the front page "contest section" could be hosted by the admins, and regular users could participate, with winning projects getting front page as well "________ Contest winners - Top 3" with other contests and winners in the see more section.

I agree totally. I think that there should be one like once a month or somthing hosted by the admins or the site because one user is biased and it wouldn't get very far. I support it all the way though.

One more good reason for having a section like this is if you are in a creative slump, and you cannot think of any new ideas, just make an entry for the contest! Of course, only one entry would be allowed per person so as to stop spam..........

Boinoinoi: the mouse in your signature is right! (Except for the IP address, I hope). I know BigB and Archmage have put a few math related contests here; it seems you've stumbled upon an interesting idea!

What about conflicting time zones?

You'd choose the time zone for that part. For example, I'd choose something like 4:00pm EST Tuesday. Good point. I'll go edit that now....... *swoosh*

not to go way off topic, but boinoinoi, you might want to make your signature a little smaller. the first picture is a little big. BTW i like the sign

Boinoinoi, please make your signature shorter.

He may even be right on your IP address if your computer is connected to the back side of a router. The IP address that he listed may be the correct address for the front side of the router. I'm pretty sure that he hit the front side of my router correct.

Okay people, My sig is shorter now, but the sign (by Danasoft) is gone. It IS more than two lines, and I'll (eventually) make the picture shorter.
Now, can we please get back on topic?

mmmmhh lemons! jk, jk. I do think a contest section would be great, but users should not be the ones hosting. Personally, I think that users can give the ideas for contests, and the admins will make it if they like.

Yes, bias is a very big part of it to think about, and I started to think about it, when, all of a sudden, it came to me. VOTES. Users would be able to cast 2-4 votes (not on the same project, but you'd be able to vote on your project), and if there was a tie breaker, the owner of the competition would be able to split it. But still, there might be a truckload of useless competitions, made just so that you could have a project win a competition. I'll think about it.........

Ok, easy solution. Members give ideas, Scratch team makes contests from them, users get one entry per, and one vote (not for their own!) If someone is found to be spamming stuff like "vote for me or ill flag your projects" they are disqualified and possible banned from contests. The competition would work as a gallery, but with voting and such. Completely irrelevant projects can be flagged, but not as inappropriate. "Flag as Irrelevant". Then, the users can decide, and all will be fair. Also, since in a gallery only new projects are on the front page, this will randomly scramble the projects within, like the random projects section. That way, exposure in the contest is sure to be even and completely fair! Nobody will be able to skew the votes, since there is no way to find a loophole! Also, instead of cheating and making many users just to get you favorite one to win, it can just allow one vote per ip address and one per user in case they have multiple computers as well. The person who entered could also check how many votes they have, but not who they have them from, since a vote is a private thing. It could show up in the love-it section, except with a link "in _ contests, _ votes in total. and then if you click on that it would say how many votes per contest individually. And to disallow copying, if a project is "based off ______ project" or "based off of ______'s work" it would not be allowed to be entered.

Great Idea! Calling Andremsh, we got a new idea!

It is basically loop-hole free. If a person has more than one user, and more than one computer, they might be able to vote 2 times, or more depending on number of users and computers, but it is VERY unlikely that one user would have access to more than one or two computers.

I don't have a horse in this race, and I don't care who wins the argument, but I will point out that every computer science student in every college and university in the world probably has access to a minimum of 50 or 60 different computers during the course of each semester. To some extent, students in middle school and high school probably also have access to many different computers.

Yeah, I actually go to a Scratch club, and I can see it now, every kid running from one computer to the next, voting on each computer, using a different user name. Also, I have two (working) computers in my house.
Which brings me to another issue; about .21 of the users actually have a project. That means that there are about 86,000 users without any projects. I'm betting that somewhere around a third of those people haven't posted any comments, either.
(by the way, dbal, is it really necessary to post all those links at the and if all your posts? You can just put that in your signature.)

While I do know that people might just start running frantically like you said, it is probably the best way to discourage cheating, and I cannot think of any other way to stop it. It is the best bet at ending spam votes. I know that there are many project-less users, who were created for the sake of whatever, but in order to vote, you would have to be an "active user" which might mean posting comments, or having at least one project. If a person has no projects, no comments, and all they do is vote, they would be automatically dq'ed. It's not perfect, but it is probably the best way, until computers require genetic input for a password

I don't think the scratch team will implement a contest and voting system, they have more important things to do. But I think that they will probably support any contests that you try to organize on your own.

Well, it is just a suggestion.

Much better. Boinoinoi, can you make the picture in your sig a little less wide? Thanks
