WHen I download the download, I can log in, but then there's a black screen, and then it shuts off. I have tried reinstalling, updating java, and deleting my MC files, but to no avail.

Did you delete the .minecraft file itself?  you need to do THAT to reset your minecraft.

Where's that? In appdata? 'Cause I did that.

How do I remove ambiance? I deleted it from %appdata% and it just downloaded it and put it back...

And I was in there earlier settling a city with  IRL friend and guppyn the super mod cam along trying to flat the area and the idiot screwed up flattening like all the area really weird and deleting a house and 9 full chests of Whiz's stuff.

And we told like 50 times we wanted to be legit with our city.

Gee that sucks. I saw you on there, and it said you got killed by lava. Then I left like 30 seconds later   

I'm building my house (I call it a hobbit hole) behind the giant "SCRATCH" sign, in the hill above the weird lava house. I have made little progress cuz I've only been on that server for a total of about 15 minutes. Right now, I buried myself somewhere near my house because it got dark and I couldn't get to my house in time, so just dug a whole, set up a torch, and shut myself in before all the zombies came    Whiz and a friend of his were on there.

As for my single player, I've built a house out of the side of a hill, and put a big 20 block-tall observation tower on top as a land mark. It's pretty sweet.

I'm kind of new to Minecraft so could somebody explain how you get the texture packs/skins and stuff, please?

You could make a 1x1 tower made of stone with a wooden lookout on top. You would need more ladders.
