You just walk around the nether. Place a nonflammable block like cobblestone to mark your way back to you portal, in case you get lost.
To fight blazes, I recommend using a fishing rod to bring them close to you if they aren't above a solid, accessible block, but keep a 1-block distance to avoid a melee attack. Also, you are immune to their main attack (fireballs) with a fire resistance potion, so once you get a blaze rod, you should rush to make a fire resistance potion, which is made by brewing and awkward potion (netherwart) with magma cream.

You craft an iron pick, some armour, at least a stack of torches, a stone or better sword, a lot of cobble stone and dirt, go into a VERY deep cave, be ready to fight loads of skeletons, creepers, zombies and whatever other mobs you find, and dig and dig and dig. And when you hit diamond, build a platform around it (especially below it), because diamond tends to appear near lava. Then mine it. Also, you NEED to have the platform on the block directly below it.

How is that even remotely relevant to what I just said? Redstone isn't very uncommon, you can rack up a stack in one mining trip.

Got it. Are the fortresses common?

I say 1 per 250 blocks, maybe? I dunno, not too common, but not too rare, either.

Perhaps you could compare it to the rarity of something in the overworld?

Actually, I really liked the new updates to the game.
However, I do miss the old Minecraft--like, before beta 1.8. I've been playing Minecraft for about 1 1/2 years, so I started in Beta 1.3_01.
Same!

A village. Fortresses are tougher to find though since there is no sky so a veiw of them gets blocked.

Translator gives me a "Did you mean 'guttMan'?" which I suspect would be a mistake that was supposed to say "Many thanks to my good man"?

Yeah, I would say that a nether fortress is about as rare as a village.

It's German for "Many thanks, my good man!" (I didn't need a translator )
And 1.3 later today.
