You can stack food, that's pretty much it.

But I wish they turned the cauldron into something which could let you put ore and stuff into like a chest inventory and some fuel into a slot and it would all cook.

Exactly. All they do is act like buckets but nonmoving, as well as one use in potionmaking. You could almost replicate them by making a hole in the ground and putting water in them.

Better than wolves does that.
The idea came at around 1.4.
They also have working elevators that can carry minecart tracks/redstone, pottery, saws, and a bunch of really easy to implement minecraft-esque ideas.
