Lava is very useful, but not renewable.

Make a renewable water source first.

Like so:

B= block of any solid type
W= Water

B WWW B
B B B B B

Just take out from the middle, and the water will just flow back into place.

Lava is useful in such ways:

Lava beacon:
L
LBL
LBL
LBL
LBL
LBL
LBL
LBL
LBL
LBL
LBL
LBL
BBBBBBB

B= any nonflammable solid block
L= lava

Furnace resource. Lava has 100 uses for a furnace. A lava bucket will also consume the bucket, so only use it for a furnace if you have more iron for a bucket, or just another bucket.

One thing I wanted to do was make a space about 20x20x4, probably out of cobblestone.

I will line the inside with redstone torches, and have a switch that turns them on.

I will keep them off, and let mobs spawn on the inside. I will put some dispensers and pressure plates on the inside too, and it will kill the mobs on the inside.

The redstone torches will keep mobs from spawning when i am inside claiming the epicness.

It is an epic trap of epicness. What do you guys think? Obviously, it will take a lot of redstone, a lot of bows, a ton of arrows, and a lot of time.

I have both lava and water springs in my immediate vicinity. Which do you recommend I put in my bucket?

It doesn't matter. You could just go back the whatever place you need to when you need something specific, because, at one point, you may need water, when at another, you may need lava.

Which one to put in your bucket depends from time to time, so that question is not answerable.

You can reuse buckets?

EDIT: I'll do lava (for defense against mobs)

I was surprised, I had no lag, even when I blew up TNT.

How much Memory does your cpmputer have? I've got a measly 1 gig.

How long have you been playing for?

Also, a tip for you people out there who might find the caves a bit dark, if you haven't already, switch the lighting to simple or whatever the low one is. Fancy lighting is also darker.

Use iron or diamond picks. Stone is only for coal, iron, lapis lazuli and stone.

Re: Minecraft Official Topic

I just found the most amazing cavern. Three dungeons (Hurray... Cocoa beans for cookies), a *Massive* pit, which I was looking up into, it took me more than a 64 stack of stone to reach the top, and the most water and lava I've ever seen, mixed in with Lapis Lazuli, coal, a vein of 6 diamond, and some redstone.

Ah...
