Faults- IP address banning

I don't know about anyone else, but I have a DYNAMIC IP address.
That means my IP address is constantly changeing.
So,

IF SOMEONE WAS IP ADRESS BANNED, THEY COULD CHANGE THEIR IP ADRESS< CREATE A NEW ACCOUNT AND START TROLLING AGAIN!!

Thank you.
That is all.

Re: Faults- IP address banning

Yeah, I have a dynamic IP too. This could be a problem, but I think they ban users directly too.

That is a trick so old Dynamic IP was exploited before fire was created.

Unfortunately, it's exploited so much because it works  sad  The only way is to prevent it in the first place. Forum Fighters was a small but fierce campaign group, maybe you can restart it. If you do, I'll join.

Re: Faults- IP address banning

Yep, that's an issue.  With dynamic IP's we can also block at the subnetwork level, if necessary, but that can lock out a lot of people they may not deserve it.  However, we have had to resort to it a few times - unfortunately.

Re: Faults- IP address banning

Yeah this is a big problem for websites. There is one other way to block people. (I just thought of this now)

Every user must download a program on to their computer to log in (Though it restricts many people). The program then sends information that identifies their computer such as MAC address, OS, program ID among other things to a sever running the program.

Find someone post count. Click posts under username. Find number of pages. Times that by 40 for min and 60 for max and you have a rough estimate of post count.

We appreciate the good intentions, but please do not restart forum fighters. Vigilante groups tend to make things much worse. The best solution for dealing with trolls is to flag, and ignore (in other words - Don't feed the trolls.)

What does FF has to do with this?
I think it's already been settled that FF was just a pain for the moderators, trying to use combined reporting to try and help, but they were only making things worse. Dynamic IP addresses have nothing to do with the forum fighters at all

I must agree.

What  were the FF? A group of rebells who were intent on banning scratchers?
