Limit for uploading games is too Short!!!

Okay the uploading limit is too short! I think the people at Scratch should escalate it up to like a Gig. sad

Re: Limit for uploading games is too Short!!!

A whole GB? That's over 100x the current size limit - imagine how long that would take to download  yikes

The reason there's a limit is so that it doesn't overload the Java player, and so people with slow internet connections can play it without having to wait forever.

If the limit's causing you problems because your project is over it, try these:
1. Click the "Edit" menu, select "Compress Sounds..." and chose a sound quality. Normal is recommended, since it cuts down the size a lot and doesn't sound bad. You can also do this with images if you want, but it usually doesn't do much.
2. If it's still too big, get rid of whatever you don't need, like non-important sounds or effects.

I'm taking a break from Scratch until 2.0 comes out. Any messages sent between then and now probably won't be read - sorry.

Re: Limit for uploading games is too Short!!!

Reasons why not:
1. The server would never load.
2. The game would never load, after the file loads.
3. The game would not download, after the page loads.
4. The game would take too long to open in scratch, after the file is downloaded after the page loads.
5. The game would lag, after the file is opened after the file is downloaded after the page loads.

As a new scratcher, I'm pretty sure you won't need 1000 MB of space, I rarely use up to 5.

Re: Limit for uploading games is too Short!!!

10 Megabytes is a lot. Just taking a guess here, but unless you are making a game with more than 20 songs, 100 sprites and a few hundred scripts, 10 mb should fit. Or just compress some stuff.

Re: Limit for uploading games is too Short!!!

Problem is the filesize of blocks themselves.

I heard from a guide that a green flag is 4kb and a forever is the same.

All of these comments speak the truth. There ARE good reasons for this rule.

So you support?  tongue  Forever takes up a lot of space too.

I think Forever's problem is the load on processing/memory, not project size... regardless, I don't think 4 kb is that bad. If you think about it, your would need 2,500 green flag blocks to fill up the 10 MB limit. They're rather insignificant.

10 MB is a lot of space... you just need to watch out for the enormous soundtracks.  hmm

Re: Limit for uploading games is too Short!!!

Solution: Simply make your sound files smaller. Sound files a few minutes long can take up to 5 mb. And something 5 or 6 minutes long...

A gigabyte is 1024 megabytes >:U But anyway, you're right, I would have to take all my music to turn a 10mb scratch project into 1gb file. And 1gb would take about an hour to download.

yeah, your right too.  But anywayz onto my little random rant
well maybe 1Gb is to much (Well, it IS to much) but 30 - 50 MB is about rightz.  Because a Green Flag 4 KB I song 1 MB a sprite anywhere from 1KB to 5MB (I knowz, that'z a lotz) So yeah.  I make bad quality graphicz so imz Okz

I know. but it would be useful for creating EPIC games.

Re: Limit for uploading games is too Short!!!

Maybe about 20-30MB? With the current 10MB limit you could make Scratch in Scratch and still only have it less than 7MB... so 10MB is actually quite large.

My brother is working on a game in which the menu is six or seven megabytes.

Do you realize just how big music and images are? An Eight minute mp3 takes up twenty megabytes and a large image takes four.

If a game has one hundred sprites, it should have six hundred scripts if it wants to be functional.

Hmm, would a remake of sims fill 10 megs? That includes Sounds, art (3d) music, maybe a few 300 Scripts?

Actually, the limit was made because Java has a limit: 10MB. This has been said lots of times before. The limit may go up as Scratch will now be made in Flash.

Re: Limit for uploading games is too Short!!!

1. It causes server bandwidth, or server pressure, to rise.
2. 10MB is a lot, usually more than most hosts allow!
3. If its 1.25gb for example, then it would take an estimated 10 minutes to load on a 1.5mb/s download rate.
4. Java would probably crash.
5. The server would crash.
6. You can compress it.
7. There's several restrictions in place on MIT's lab, especially the "infinite bandwidth" part.
8. It'd be expensive! On a regular host, 500 1gb projects would probably cost you a couple hundred to host!

Back in my day.... there were no laws that censored the internet... now, there are.... nah.

I made a 40 MB realtime RPG. And I can't upload it. A gig IS too much, but 50 MB?

I worked on it for months. It's a big job. All that work, and it can't be uploaded.
mad
It's 40.7 MB. My magnum opus!
I'm going to make it lighter. But I can't just drop 30 MB. Then it's not a realtime RPG anymore.
