Batch commands: Which not to use.

There are many good Batch commands, like Echo and Ping, also Pause, but there are a few bad commands, like Format.

Format: Deletes all your computer's memory. It also uninstalls the OS.

Del: It's pretty harmless unless you do some of these:

Del Windows
Del C:
Del Sys32

Deltree: This is a little complicated, I can't even completely understand it, but I think it functions like Del.

If anyone wants to add to this, then feel free to tell me!

Re: Batch commands: Which not to use.

There are some pretty complicated ones specifically for malicious purposes, such as removing all antivirus, locking access to my documents, and so on. I watched someone use the my documents locking one.

Re: Batch commands: Which not to use.

Format is very bad. Del isn't bad, it is actually VERY useful, but it like you said, it can be used to destroy computers.

Deltree is for deleting entire folders, and the subfolder and contents.

Also, your examples for Del are incorrect, at least the 1st and 3rd are. You have to use the path to the file/folder. The correct way to do those are:

Del C:\Windows
Del C:\                                       (same, because C: is the root of all paths)
Del C:\Windows\System32              (it is System32, not Sys32, at least in my experience)

I have another two commands for your list: Taskkill and Fdisk. Both are like Del: Useful, but can be used to kill computers (temporarily in the case of Taskkill). Taskkill kills active processes, and Fdisk modifies hard disk partitions (can have same effect as Format).

I hope this all helps everyone.  smile

Del C:\Windows\System32

Probably the worst thing that can ever happen to your computer.

I know of some of these, but I won't mention them, because I don't want to be responsible for some making a Pentagon-killer virus based on example code I put up.

Batch can be used to make viruses, and quite easily. But, thankfully, no one uses batch to do this. Batch isn't complex enough to steal credit card numbers, and send it to a online server, which removes all money-related motivation to make a virus with it.

I have....Mac OS X (Snow Leopard and Jaguar), Windows  (98, XP, Vista, 7), and Ubuntu. My mom gets all the Windows ones from her work, I got Jaguar from my Grandpa, I got Snow Leopard for my birthday, and Ubuntu is free.

I actually am on a Max OS X Snow Leopard. Sadly, no VirtualBox on my computer. At least, one with internet.

It took a lot of money to go from Tiger to Snow Leopard.

LOL! You're all using the wrong command! It's rd (or rmdir), not del, that deletes directories!  tongue

In the Windows XP, you can still delete a folder with Del.

I'm not very experienced with Batch, so please tell me: What does the echo command do?

The glass is never half full nor half empty; it is twice as large as it needs to be.

A directory IS a folder.  tongue

@rubiks_cube_guy: echo just ECHOs what you type. So if you type "echo Hello World!", it will say "Hello World!" on the next line.

I'd also avoid "regedit" if you don't know what you're doing.  tongue

Regedit is useful (and awesome), but if you are not a computer expert, you can really mess up your computer with it.

You can change the start text.

But it can also save your computer! If you have the Notepad Trojan, you search for Note.exe, and replace Notepad.exe with Note.exe.

You also have to use Regedit to delete the Notepad Trojan's presence. But DON'T delete Notepad, just delete Note.exe. You might have converted Note.exe to the Notepad Trojan, so use a scanner to see if you got rid of the last trace of it.

BTW, I'm 8. I got all of this from Youtube.  lol

If you are reading this, please read to the end, because if you don't you won't know what's at the end. Don't just skip to the end though otherwise you won't be able to read the middle, which is most important. Now you must be wondering why you just read all that, the reason is you may have not noticed something, read it again and see if you notice it this time  smile

you're not supposed to make false quotes.

IDK much about batch, but they could be useful in justbasic.

The only safe place to use Format is when you NEED to or in a VM for fun.

Sigh...

I hate people who do stuff like that just for fun. I did not, will not, and shall never hack. I've only made viruses to test my antivirus, and I only use a happy virus, which opens lots of windows. It's even easy to stop with this one command:

exit happy.bat

It's made in batch.
