4 Way scrolling
Can anyone show me an efficient 4-way scrolling script that uses costumes?

there is no effective way to use 4 way scrolling with only 1 costume... Unless your sprite is a box... or some other extremely simple shape. check out archmages project this should help: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/archmage/313838

Unfortunately, there is no way to create 4-directional scrolling with costumes only, unless you want to be extremely frivolous and offset the costume by one, two, three, four, five, six, etc. pixels.
I'd recommend making four sprites... Dazman's project can help you there
