Re: Replying to disrespectful comments is not OK

I think there are two ways to handle a situation like this.
1.Alert the scratch team
2.Tell the mean person in a kind way.

Re: Replying to disrespectful comments is not OK

Great post! I never see enough of these kinds of things that help people be kind. The only edit I would make is that it is OK to reply something like this: "Please help the community be a better place by being friendly." And then flag it.

Re: Replying to disrespectful comments is not OK

I sometimes just reply to a mean comment with, "why is that?" That way, when they tell me what they don't like, it actually helps me to improve it.

These are certainly better than writing mean comments back to them. But flagging is still better, because it let's us know we need to follow up and ask the troll to read the community guidelines, so they understand what's ok and what isn't.

Bad idea--a friend of mine fell into that trap.  They'll start flagging you.  Not only does it make more work for moderators, it's really annoying.

If you flag something, it's generally a bad idea to say you did it.

Re: Replying to disrespectful comments is not OK

Meh, I'm a bit short-tempered but I try my best to maintain sanity when being provided with nonconstructive criticism  tongue  Usually if I see abuse I ask them why they want to put [owner of project] down. I just read this and am trying to figure out if this is within circumstances or not. I know that "Well your projects aren't any better" is definitely something I see tossed around a lot and is not okay. I've learned humor or being friendly in a situation like that can make things less awkward.

Yeah, I think that's why when you flag a comment the reply button goes away. I'm sure Scratch cannot prevent someone commenting beforehand, so it's best just to flag and forget about it, the mods will take care of it.

andresmh wrote:

It has come to my attention that there is something a lot of Scratchers do not understand well and I am wondering how to explain.

A lot of people thing that it is OK to respond to attacks with more attacks or with threats. This is not acceptable and I would like you to help us spread this message.

Here is a fictional example:

Person A: "Your project sucks."
Person B: "You suck more. I hate you! I am going to flag you and get you banned."

Who is right? A or B? Well, the right answer is neither of them!

We all know that what person A did is against the Scratch Terms of Use. We do take those comments seriously and typically block accounts that post that kind of disrespectful messages.

However, it seems to me that a lot of people think that what Person B responded is fine because she or he "did not started" or because she or he is  "just responding". Well, this is not OK and we often block Person B's account as well.

You are encouraged to flag and report inappropriate content but there is no need to tell people that you are doing it because it only creates more conflicts.

It is not OK to respond to attacks with more attacks.

Please help us spread the word that:

a) Disrespectful comments are not OK
b) Responding to disrespectful comments is also not OK.
c) People should flag disrespectful or inappropriate content, contact the Scratch Team and then ignore it. Do not respond to it publicly because this only creates a cycle of attacks.

If you have suggestions on how to improve this or any other ideas about this, please let us know.

Thanks and Scratch On!

shouldnt this read:
a lot of people THINK it is ok instead of THING?

I get really bugged by the smallest things, like "this sucks" or "I could do way better".
Should I report them less?
