Re: Replying to disrespectful comments is not OK

I agree about fighting fire with more fire is wrong. But are you also saying it is wrong to respond to mean comments with something like "That is against the terms of use and it could get you in a lot of trouble. you shouldn't do that." Or are you saying just don't be mean in a response. I don't respond anyway, but I am just asking out of curiosity.

Re: Replying to disrespectful comments is not OK

first off, if mods ban for saying someones project is bad, that is WAY to strict and doesnt make for a fun community.  trolling, spamming, hating, and flaming is part of the spirit!
second off, what if it is bad?  what do you want us to do, offer constructive criticism? pshaw.
and finally, what if theres something else you dont know?  just because 2 people flame each other doesnt meant hey dont know each other in real life, or even just over the internet, and are just teasing each other?  dont be so quick to judge, and make the scratch community sanitary, bland, and unsmiling.

The Scratch Team wants this online community to be a place where users, from the youngest to the oldest, can learn about Scratch - much like it's hard to learn in school when the environment is negative and destructive, it is hard to do learn Scratch if people see trolling, spamming, hating, and flaming around, which is why such things are usually deleted.

second off, what if it is bad?  what do you want us to do, offer constructive criticism? pshaw.

Um, yes, we would like it if you gave constructive criticism if you think the project could be better. ^^

Like I stated previously, it is hard to learn Scratch if people see trolling, spamming, hating, and flaming around even if they're not involved in it). If there is a misunderstanding, the users involved can always contact the Scratch Team at help@scratch.mit.edu to clarify things if necessary.  smile

1. You do not have to give constructive criticism if you don't want. If you don't have something nice or constructive to say, you can just ignore the project.

2. We do not care if two people know each other and like to tease each other. Why? Because other people don't know that you know each other and people who read those comments will think that this is the way people talk to each other on the website.  You can tease each other all you want, just use a different website or method of communication.

3. We need to be quick to judge because there are hundreds of flags and reports we need to evaluate every day. We cannot spend much time checking in a lot of detail each case.

This makes perfect sense. It doesn't matter who started it, just that you did it at all and you're being disrespectful if you're either Person A or Person B.

emilypie wrote:

yeah, i think this should get around too. i used to do that. but now i stopped.  tongue

i was just wondering, what if we, before we flag them, ask them NICELY to stop? Like this

Person A: This project sucks.
Person B: Well, thank you for your opinion. Could you please explain to me why you don't like it, so that I may improve it? Oh, and next time I'd appreciate it if you would be a bit more kind when saying you don't like a project. Thanks!  big_smile
Person B: Stupid. Why would I care how YOU feel?
Person A: [Flags]

so...yeah. i just want that to be cleared up, y'know, if it's OK to do that. 'cause, that's what i sorta do. ^^; I believe too much in second chances, so i always wait for the person to say sorry before I flag. i wouldn't want anyone to get banned 'cause of a misunderstanding.

Also, I've been wondering, when we flag a comment, do you see the replies that were made on that comment, too? Just wondering. And when you flag a comment, and then it gets deleted, do you still see it? those questions have just been bugging meh for a loooong time.  big_smile

I'm going to add a link to this in my siggy in a sec to spread the word.  big_smile

I think responding nicely is a possible good option. However, it is hard to know how to do this well. The example you mention works with bad comments like "your project sucks" but sometimes is harder to come up with a good answer for more destructive comments. In summary, it is OK to respond nicely but only do it if you know how to do it really well, otherwise just flag.

When you flag a comment we typically do not go and check the replies but sometimes we do, it depends on the comment.  We can still see comments that are deleted.

If too many comments are spam at a time, lock the comment system for 2 days. Or give an EXTREME warn to the suspect.

It is possible to lock comments on one of your projects, so I'd recommend that.  smile

Regardless, still flag the comments.

I would suggest not giving any kind of warnings.
