Remove 14-year limit on moderators

Vote here: http://suggest.scratch.mit.edu/forums/6 … ear-limit-

Remove the age limit. It's unfair... Where's your proof that being 14 suddenly makes you more mature than being 13?

Re: Remove 14-year limit on moderators

There's no proof
I'm 17 and I'm probably less mature than many 13 year olds on here
On the outer internets, though, I'm like a professor

I agree with this.  There shouldn't be any set age limit.

Re: Remove 14-year limit on moderators

There's no proof, but the decision is final
Why are you guys making such a big deal? Because you can't run for moderator?
Think about the new scratchers also. When they introduced the new usergroup, no one rose up for them, creating thousands of topics, to debate it because the scratch team knew what they were doing. They probably know what they are doing right now, as well

Re: Remove 14-year limit on moderators

The decision is final. It may be difficult to understand - and I would definitely be shocked and angry if I were in your position - but there's a lot of maturity and subtleties involved in moderating that you really can't comprehend unless you're in the position of a moderator.

Aye!  tongue  I feel bad saying this, but a mature ten year old or something doesn't seem that great enough an idea for a mod... ^^

The decision to add the age limit wasn't based on maturity at all; the Scratch Team, does, in fact, feel that there are those under 14 years of age who are mature enough to become moderator. The issue is that, given some of the issues that moderators have to deal with, they are not comfortable with having younger users deal with them (even if the younger users feel they can handle them).

To extend onto this, this is also why they want parents to contact the Scratch Team should the candidate win; not only as a confirmation of age, they want parents to be comfortable with the role that their child may be undertaking.  smile

Re: Remove 14-year limit on moderators

Well, there are mainly 2 things we're angry about:

1)You spent a whole year preparing for this, and bam! You get hit in the face just like that.

2)For some Scratchers, they feel it's age discrimination...

But I see the logic. Therefore, I will not agree or disagree with the rule. I'll just state facts.

Understandably, it does make many people feel upset, especially since it was so sudden and close to election time (I'd be upset, too, if I were in that position). But, believe me, that decision made my the Scratch Team wasn't made lightly, they were pondering long and hard about this, too. It was only very recently that they [the Scratch Team] finalized the decision on the 14 year old age limit, so the timing of the decision was too sudden and unfortunate for those who wanted to run but are too young to do so.

That's a shame.  sad  Then again, it does make sense.

Different types of maturity?

Yes, most websites do have a thirteen-year age limit as the bare minimum. But there is a TON of responsibility involved in moderating that the bare minimum just wouldn't suffice.

And some sites bump the age requirement up to 14 years of age instead of thirteen.  tongue

Re: Remove 14-year limit on moderators

I think the one reason that the Scratch team prefers fourteen to thirteen is that by the time your fourteen, you will have experienced high school and what not.
