Although I think he was originally a boy in Japan, but was made female in the US and since then Nintendo have never confirmed it, and have left plenty of clues that he/she/it could be a male is some games, and a female in others.

When has that been popular belief? That's just stupid. If anything, it would be the American because they have a habit of making the words less silent lettery: center-centre, color-colour...
