I have my fantastic typing skillz to thank! All we did in middle school computer class was Type To Learn. So when I finished that about a month ahead of schedule, my computer teacher (who shall remain nameless) had no choice but to introduce me to a useful piece of software. And so it began!

Aw, we never used any typing programs... I just typed by seeing "Oh, x is here, y is here," and then just got faster at it. I don't even know how I learned where I was supposed to put which fingers... I sorta improvise. But it's not like I use one finger.

Wow! I have a virtually identical story.
In typing class in 5th grade we were required to take a Pre-Test to evaluate our typing skills. I got 63 Word Per Minute and 2 Errors and didn't have to take the class. The head of technology at my school took me, (and 3 other students) aside and told us about Scratch.
