Java freezes computer?

I accepted Java to make changes to my hard drive, but then, on the TBG forums, my computer froze. I followed all the steps for restoring my computer, so my computer is fine now. But I disallowed Java to make changes to my computer once my computer was fullly recovered from the freezing problem. Why did Java freeze my computer (And I actually KNOW that Java did it, because it froze  a couple minutes after I let Java make changes to my laptop)

Re: Java freezes computer?

This might be a silly question, but are you sure the Java you have isn't a trojan?

Re: Java freezes computer?

This is not really related to Scratch I think. And are you really sure that it's Java?

There are two things that could of happened here:

1. You have a computer not meeting the basic requirements of Java.
2. You downloaded something that appeared to be Java but in reality was a virus of some sort.

In my guess it's the first thing on the list that happened, sadly. Java by Sun Micro-systems is free of viruses, and shouldn't ever cause anything like that to happen.

Here's the official download link:

I KNOW it isn't, and my security scans come out clean. Maybe my computer doesn't have all of the Java requirements.

What are the specs?

I don't really think your computer isn't compatible with Java. Java is a program that generally needs 128 Mb's of memory to run. In today's standards that is such a miniscule amount Scratch couldn't really even run properly on your computer.

Although, I can always be wrong.  hmm

It never hurts to check. There can be other issues, too.

My laptops memory is... Hold on, I have to look at Task Manager to see..... Okay, I checked, and it turns out that I have 805 MB of RAM, so I don't really see why Java needed to freeze my computer  hmm

Java froze the TBG? I don't believe there are any components of the forums that use Java… I'm not sure I fully understand.

I think he/she was using a program that uses Java on his/her computer while he/she was also using the TBG.

Good point!  yikes

And the TBG uses the same type of forums as the Scratch Forums... so why didn't it happen here?

Maybe it doesn't have to do with Java...

So - did you have Java open at the time? It could have been a simple coincidence - as I pointed out, the forums have no relevance to Java.

No, I didn't have Java open when I was in the forums.

Why Java froze my computer doesn't make sense, it seems  hmm

Well, how do you know it was Java, then? There don't seem to be any clues pointing to Java haven frozen your computer  hmm

Here's a clue: I accepted Java to make changes to my hard drive a minute before my computer froze.

Re: Java freezes computer?

Your browser may have caused the freeze. The TBG forums do not use java. And also, it's unlikely that Java have caused the freeze.

Re: Java freezes computer?

Well, the only time Java would ask if it could make changes to your hard drive is when you are downloading it or updating it. Maybe the download for the update stopped somehow (like bad internet connection) and froze up your browser witch froze everything else. That sounds kind of unlikely, but it could happen.
