You load a gun and fire it at a portal. Providing that the gun has enough power and the projectile is sturdy enough, and you do not miss, your projectile will teleport through the portal to eastern Belarus, where it will smash a huge bell made of praseodymium, making the world blow up for some reason. Then you win.

Then again, it looks like objects go right through the cake. Maybe the cake is a hologram, and a lie after all. 

talking about cake, it's possible to BEAT portal without killing GLaDOS. But you need to have a few cheats handy. You need to go find the trail the flying cam does when you beat the game, then approach the cake.

Also, i even found out how to SAVE THE CUBE! 
On the companion cube level, go into "Chells room" and pick up the cameras, you have to place them in a wierd posistion, (Check youtube for more) then incinrate a storage cube instead.

What is the companion cube level?

The one where you meet (and burn,) the companion cube.
