Re: more powerful programming language...

Python isn't that good for games and is hard to compile to an executable. I prefer c++. Its not that hard.

Re: more powerful programming language...

You should start with Just Basic. It's not very powerful, but it's a good stepping stone. It'll help you transition into something like C, or JavaScript. It has a nice set of tutorials, which I recommend you follow to get started. Some of it will be review from Scratch, but a lot of it is new material.  (By the way, I recommend doing C and not C# or C++ first).

Re: more powerful programming language...

Unlike Scratch and a few other programming languages, languages aren't limited to one program. However, the generally used one is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/express/downloads/#2010-Visual-CS
Once again, I DO NOT suggest starting with C#. It'll just discourage you.

Re: more powerful programming language...

You really shouldn't jump into something like C, C++, or Java without using Python or JustBasic. They aren't powerful, but they will help you.

Re: more powerful programming language...

I recommend Python, because it's relatively powerful, the syntax is easy to understand (unlike Perl) and it's well documented. Here's a great guide for beginners.

And shadow_7283, what's wrong with C++ or C#? I know they're considerably different than C, being object oriented and all, but what's so bad about that?

Re: more powerful programming language...

I kinda went from Scratch -> Microsoft Visual Basic -> Microsoft Visual C#. But I stay on all of them. Notice how I've never left scratch? Or attempted? If I do leave I leave. No questions asked.

Nothing is wrong with it, I just don't think it's a good starting language.

What's bad about java? It is a "simplified" version of C++

Darkbasic is pretty useful.
You can sell your darkbasic devoloped games without loyalty.
But only games, you can't make stories like on scratch.

Re: more powerful programming language...

I am trying Just Basic, and it is pretty easy! Not powerful, but more so than Scratch.

IGNORE THE BELOW PARAGRAPH IF YOU HAVE A MAC OR LINUX.

Another thing to try is Batch Processing. It is EXTREMELY EASY, and comes with Windows!
To make one, use Notepad and save it as .bat. Google it to learn how to program in it. Only problems are that it is only about as powerful as Panther, and is text-only output. For an example of what you can do with it, go to simpldos.webs.com. It is my website for SIMPL-DOS, a Disk Operating System-like batch file. Download the source, right click it, and click Open.

Batch files are really useful for productivity. They can be really effective for file management, such as backing up a USB flash drive. Finally, a use for Notepad!  tongue

Oh, those days.
I remember someone posted a Bat script on roblox that "gives free real-life money", then you see all your stuff on your PC, followed by "Everyone want's free money, idiot"
I remember using it, pretty awsome. :3

Re: more powerful programming language...

@Harakou Yup. They are really supposed to be used for system maintenance for noobs, but they can be used for anything short of graphical stuff.  smile

@coolboy   smile  Batch Scripts ARE pretty old, older than 98% of Scratchers. I think they started in MS-DOS 2.1, in 1983? Anyway,  lol  at the internet noobs that thought that script would give them money. That is the oldest trick in the book. They better be glad that it didn't remove critical files off their computer.
