what's up with linux? I know that it is an OS, and that it is free and open source. What are the benefits of linux over windows? I also heard that downloading erases the hard drive, is there any way to avoid this? And last of all, is there any way to go back and forth between Linux and windows?

Canonical (the people who made Ubuntu) made a Windows installer called Wubi.
You can find it at http://ubuntu.com/
I used Wubi, and it also leaves an uninstaller so you can delete Ubuntu easily.

I made a dual boot pc but you had to of virtualy split your hard drive when you installed windows. Otherwise you will lose or your information.

Yeah, it's not perfect. But anything else I did seemed to make it a lot slower
