I don't really like this idea
There are probably over 40,000 people signed in at all times, and it would keep switching. It would be too much work to implement, and with the vast amount of users, you probably wouldn't see if your friends were online anyway

I agree...
Not such a good idea.

What's the use of it?

People could see if there friends are online on the main site.
What if there are 5000000 users online? It would take a long time to find friends.

Maybe instead of a users online section, there should be "online" or "offline" under each user page.
Would it kill people to look at this, instead of the original.

Maybe just say the current number of users online, not the names, while also saying online or offline on a user's scratch profile.

I like what ihaveamac said. Also, it should have an icon next to their name in your friends list: green (active), red (doing something else), orange (idle), or gray (offline).

Yeah, so we can compare the numbers when I can come on easily (when nobody's online) and when I can't (when everybody's online).

It's very possible and could be nice...
I think activity should be centered around people that are online and want feedback now to a particular project.
I think we waste way too much energy on projects that are not ready/intended for prime-time, just become 'popular' because the user is already 'popular', etc.
When a project shows on the front page it stays for days, and collects more comments than the project owner can ever read or use... and it becomes a prime but forbidden place for 'spammers' to solicit attention to their hard work... (much more effective than the poorly advertised or working 'show and tell' forum section.)
...while tag pages show already popular projects that have been tag spammed...
instead of those that are looking for attention or help now from people that like that type of project.
I think "friends online" might help "friends" get together... and might be useful, but I think the problems and solutions are deeper than that...
