Please don't take this the wrong way, but I have a very serious question about the new 2.0 viewer.

Why did you choose Flash over HTML5/JavaScript?

Had you choosen the latter, you'd automatically have support for iPhone et. al.

We agree that HTML5/JS would have some clear advantages, and we considered it for Scratch 2.0. Unfortunately, our development team found that HTML5/JS does not support all of the features we want/need (at least not yet -- it might in a few years). Here are a few of the issues (courtesy of John Maloney, who leads Scratch application development):

* Flash has cross-platform support for microphone and video input; HTML5 has neither.

* HTML5 doesn't yet support the audio API's necessary to write your own MIDI synth (real-time audio generation), so the Scratch note/drum blocks can't be implemented.

* Although the HTML5 Canvas does support bitmap manipulation, it's slow.

* The HTML5 specs are still evolving. Which features are implemented at varies across browsers, and sometimes a given feature behaves differently in different browsers.

Re: Help test a new way to play with Scratch projects online!

Thank you for adressing my question.

I'm just learning HTML5 and wasn't aware of its limitations.

I'm glad you considered it, even if HTML5 wasn't chosen.  Sounds like you made the right decision (for now).

Yeah, I agree - hopefully they'll revert to the retro style by 2.0.

Ooh, yes - the new blocks look too flashy.  hmm  I hope they keep the Scratch 1.4 look  big_smile

Actually, we've got more than pictures. Have you tried the experimental viewer?

No, and based on my scratch obsession rate right now, I don't think I'll be allowed to, or to become a wiki editor, even thought I'd like both.  sad

It's actually quite simple to enable the experimental viewer - just use the topic post.  smile

Re: Help test a new way to play with Scratch projects online!

Cool, but…

• Random block should have text, not die.
• The new "look" of the blocks and greenflag/stopsign is much uglier than 1.4!
• Let the block adding screen not overlay the stage.
• The look of the snap-in field for blocks is also much worse, as is the halo around running scripts.
• The fields/color of block adding need the names of the fields. Space is not such a big priority.
• You need the menus for drum/instrument selection.
• Dropdown menus on blocks should not require holding down the mouse.
• Obviously, getting the costume editor and the ability to add variables.
• Fixing the sound generation.
• Fixing the "if else" block.
• Obviously, adding save/load ability.
• Adding sound record/import.
If I think of any other problems, I'll let you know.

Re: Help test a new way to play with Scratch projects online!

The viewer doesn't seem to be able to handle updated projects, it still shows the older version.

Re: Help test a new way to play with Scratch projects online!

I have a few glitches here to be fixed in experimental viewer:

1. If a project is sprite less, it selects a non-existing sprite.
2. Enter in the key pressed dialog doesn't work.
3. There are no numbers in the key pressed dialog.
4. Variables and lists can appear if they appear online on the scratch web, but they can't show and hide [not the blocks]
5. When reporter or boolean block clicked, it doesn't report value.

Take a wrench, and a screw driver. Get to 2.0 fixing!

Also, they should move the display to the right, like in the Scratch program.

I don't get this. This project just doesn't work. Online & Online you should be able to throw the cat and it slides. In the experimental player you can drag it but the cat doesn't slide.

Another bug. This project only registers 1 sprite in the viewer, not 2.

I would recommend making it a bit faster. It crashed when I was playing a 1s1s project.
