Scratch on the Mac doesn't seem to recognize the "When space (or other) key " event which works fine on Windows. anybody else have this problem?

Nope, the keys work fine on my Mac, and have on every version of Scratch that I've used, starting with the Nov 2006 beta.
Try re-downloading scratch---you might have a damaged version.
