Why are bad words "bad words"? It's not like if you say them (maybe if you are religous, sorry) a puppy dies, they're just sounds your mouth makes. I'm not encouraging you to cuss or be a pottymouth, I just don't get it. It's not like if a bird happened to make that sound it would be a bad bird, right?

They're bad because they have explicate meanings.

They're bad words not because they make bad sounds, but because they have bad meanings. That's how I've always thought of it. No, a puppy doesn't die when you say a bad word, but the word still has a bad meaning and therefore, you're not supposed to say it.

Well, we made those meanings. Some person out there decided that those meant that.

If it's a parrot then it'd be bad XD
Anyway, I get what you mean. Like, who decides if a word is a "bad word"?
What if we just decided that "yubba" was to be banned from schools and censored in Scratch, because we think it's a bad word? Hmm..

That's true. We could have decided that "marshmallow" is a bad word.
But we didn't, so bad words have bad meanings, and marshmallows are those white, puffy foods.

Exactly what I was thinking. I am excepting from all sides on this.

We don't 'decide' that they are bad, but their meanings are bad. Most are sexually [can I say that on scratch? If not, I'll remove it] bad, but some are bad for other reasons.

Yes. I'm not saying that these are not bad, but that any sound that we can make could be considered a bad word if we were to have it mean something bad.

For most of the words, the sexual meanings came after the original ones. It's people who make the words bad.

Actually, I think that we did decide that they are bad when we chose the meanings of words.

Also a good point.

Words aren't just sounds- I believe God gave us the ability to use words to talk to each other, but he does not want us to speak perversely.
We're not supposed to talk about religion. That can end up being flamebait.
Anyway, my point is that bad words have bad meanings, so we can't say 'em.

Ooops. I may have came off as offensive.. Well apologies if I did
Umm.. Well, really, there ARE apropriate ways to use all 'bad' words, but people often misuse them, causing them to be known as bad.

Yep. I was just wondering what you guys thought. Please do not argue, cuz everyone has a right to think of this what they want. If this becomes flamebait-ish and religous, please close it. I didn't intend for it to become that.

Oh yeah. True. Just deleted my post.

JUST A REMINDER:
I'm not saying that bad words can't hurt people, or are angry words. I'm just saying that man made these words, and that these words could be replaced with any words to mean something else. Like if we replace a bad word with marshmallow, it still means the same thing.
Sorta like how bad words substitutes are still bad.

Actually, these are called 'euphemisms'- they're words that are used to replace words that might seem to harsh.

Yeah, but they should be used sparingly, shouldn't they?

I'm not quite sure they should be used at all. Like you said, a bad word replaced with a good word still means a bad word (I'm not sure that equation is mathematically sound xD).

Yeah, that's exactly what I what trying to say. You shouldn't have kindergrateners running around saying "Holy sugar!" or something along those lines. My grandma uses acronyms for euphemisms xD

Hmm...I think that some words that are used instead of bad words really don't have the same meaning as the original word. They are still not good, but they aren't as bad.
