Hello!
We are a classroom in NC, and we are trying to upload our fabulous Scratch projects for the fist time. When we try to upload, all the computers are stuck on 'connecting to scratch.mit.org'. We are able to reach Scratch fine from a browser in order to browse projects.
Any ideas??

If you're in a school, then your internet providers or whoever controls what gets blocked and allowed etc: may have a firewall or something preventing you from uploading projects
From experience, most public libraries and schools don't seem to be able to upload projects, but I could be wrong..

Here are some possible causes and solutions to your problem. From experience, if you have large sound files, the upload will be slower. If that still happens when compressed, you might have to consider removing some sounds

1. File too big (Solution: Extras menu > compress sounds, compress images)
2. Internet connection too slow and times out (Solution: make file smaller, if that doesn't work, try connecting from a different computer or connection or web browser)
3. Proxy server getting in the way (Solution: Try an Internet connection that does not go through a proxy server. For those trying to configure a Proxy/Firewall uploads are done on port 80 via HTTP).
4. Wrong username and password. (Solution: Try logging into Scratch website to make sure username and password are correct.)
5. Website "hiccup" - (Solution: Try again later).
6. Security software (Solution: Try a different computer or different settings on security software.)
7. Vista profile (Solution: try changing settings or uploading from another profile.)
Of course, uploads sometimes take a while - you could try waiting a little longer, to see if it connects

You say it's stuck at "connecting to scratch.mit.org". The actual url is scratch.mit.edu. I don't know if that might have anything to do with it, but the above problems are probably more likely.

Scratch.mit.org takes you to an MIT page that's supposed to work, too, but it doesn't for you?

it does say the correct URL when it's attempting to connect, I just typed it too quickly here
We are able to get to the regular Scratch website fine, so that's not blocked - but I'll check on that further.
Thanks

So, you can't connect to scratch.mit.edu, but you can connect to the main site? That is the main site. Are you talking about uploading projects? That may have something to do with the firewall settings

Sorry, what I mean to say is that we can access http://scratch.mit.edu fine through Internet Explorer (as you can see by this forum post
)
What it is NOT doing is uploading through the software - hanging at 'connecting to scratch.mit.edu'
I'm working with tech support at school to figure it out, but tips are welcome!!!

Are there any enabled network options that block uploads to any web server (website)? Can they be disabled completely, for disabled for certain websites? This could help...

Are any firewalls in effect? That would definitely stop Scratch from reaching the server.
Wolfie1996 posted a link to a page that tends to help people just fine - if after trying all that you're still having troubles, let us know here

You can see what day the user posted it on in the little blue bar above each post - he posted it on the 20th, when the problems had long been fixed.

If you are using a proxy to upload projects to Scratch, you'll need to change the settings in your Scratch.ini file. This page describes how:

We would prefer not to use a proxy port. We change our proxy ports regularly for security purposes, which would mean that each scratch proxy setting would need to be updated throughout the district. Is it possible to whitelist the location that the scratch projects are uploaded to?

Sure - you can set your network to have requests to scratch.mit.edu bypass your proxy. If you have any other questions, use the contact us page, and use your school email address. Thanks.

I think I remember having Windows(program to load files and edit files)have an error message box when I installed Scratch and tryed to upload saying my firewall blocked it,I clicked allow...Firewall can DEFINITLEY block anything! Its almoust like the king of the computer,so it could be a problem, and its best to try URL:scratch.mit.edu instead of:scratch.mit.org
