IDLE GAMES
You leave the game open while you do other things. Over time, your money/exp/etc will increase, and you can increase your upgrades/do more stuff. There are many themes of Idle games, such as Houses and Pokemon and Heroes and almost anything else.

ROLE-PLAYING-GAMES
Or RPGs. In these games, the player has a variety of paths or opportunities to choose from. These can have many themes as well.
