Internet???

Is it possible to have scratch have access to the internet. (As in the application that is built.)

Re: Internet???

I don't think the odds of that are very likely. Too many people would abuse it and link people to inappropriate sites. But hey, you never know!

I think it would be cool if approved members of Scratch were able to allow access to web pages through Scratch.

Re: Internet???

Sorry, man, it isn't possible at this time. There are projects such as the Web Wizard, designed by The-Whiz, that try to emulate the internet, but even that project doesn't have a single web page (or I don't think it does, anyways.)

It has a webpage (sww.dev.com/) but it takes quite a while to load.

Re: Internet???

Scratch can't, but Panther can - it can read the source of web pages.

Not just The-Whiz - the Prism group worked together on it.  wink

This may not be true, but recently, I saw a topic about someone testing a URL block.

Mesh is also in Scratch, but you have to do a little hack.

The problem with Mesh is that it only makes connections between computers both running Scratch. You can't access the World-Wide Web in Mesh, which is what this topic was trying to do  smile

Re: Internet???

yeah, check out Panther's IO blocks. You can only get the html source of websites but I guess you could make a text web browser with it if you know html

Re: Internet???

To have any connection to the internet you will have to use Mesh.

This is a link to a guide on how to get it and more.

Mesh mostly links between two computers, but doesn't access Hyper-Text Transfer Protocol. While it does use the internet to connect between the two computers, the rest of the world remains essentially excluded from the Scratch-verse that may go on with Mesh.

Rage has a block that opens your browser to a specified webpage.

Re: Internet???

If someone could only just do a little more and add an extension to Scratch, that would be cool! Add a content filter, and -BAM!- We have ourselves a child-friendly and safe Web Browser Connection. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) should be blocked.

What a wonderful idea! Stop me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Panther have built-in Internet data? I am not sure.

It can load the source code of a website, yeah. Although sometimes it gives me a buffer error.

Is it possible to use C++ to write plugins for Squeak applications? I'm no expert programmer so I really don't know.
