Because I am and was a grammar freak I capitalized my username.
Of course, greatdane isn't a fully formulated word, so let's call it a "conceptualized portmanteau".

Never start a sentence with "because".

Actually, it is often proper to start a sentence with "because." However, I think there should be a comma between "freak" and "I."

No. You start it with "It is because".
Correction:
I capitalized my username because I was, and still am, a grammar freak.

No, my original sentence was still right! You're just moving parts around, silly.
Let me separate the parts for you.
Because I was |and still am | a grammar freak | I capitalized my username.
General:
Because I was and still am a grammar freak | I capitalized my username.
You have to put a comma between two independent clauses, which means they can both stand alone as not being sentence fragments.
Because I was and still am a grammar freak Fragment definitely
I capitalized my username It is a sentence, but where's the context?
I am right, you are wrong, and you can only argue.
