Server Times Out When Uploading...

Hello,
I'm trying to upload my first project (it's 455 KB) but for some reason, it says "Data Sent. Waiting for Response..." and always ends with "Failed: Unkown Reason". Why does it do this? I have 28.8 KBPS Dial-Up Connection with Scratch 1.4 and no Java. Does this have something to do with it? Please help me. Soon, my Windows 98 simulator will be out and with mild compression, it's 4.14 MB!
I hope this can be fixed.
Signed,
WindozeNT.

Re: Server Times Out When Uploading...

There are many threads about that - try posting in them.
And try uploading it on another time. It's probably mainly because too many scratchers upload projects at the same time. (I guess so.)

Re: Server Times Out When Uploading...

Tried that a few times. Does it again...is there a server tool to find when it is ready for the connection? Or does it require Java, which my PC lacks.

No, you don't need Java. This is a very well known error that at the moment does not have any solid fixes. I think it has to do with the Scratch server not responding to your projects upload. Maybe because it is uploading a different project from someone else, or can handle only a few at a time. Since you are running a Windows 98, it is recommended that you use Scratch 1.2.1, because it was the last version supported on Windows 98. Also with a dial-up connection that slow, you may come across problems regularly, but there are some things you can try:
- Disconnect from the internet. Connect again a few minutes later and then try
- Wait until tomorrow. Sometimes you just have to wait a while...

Will it ever be fixed?
Yes, the next version of Scratch, is  going to be called Scratch 2.0. The Scratch Team is going to make HUGE changes. Scratch programming will be done all online in a Flash player, no more Java. Since the project will be programmed online, and the two players are Flash based, it will take a lot less work to upload a project online. We expect Scratch 2.0 sometime in 2011. (There will also be a new downloadable version available.)

Hope this helps!  wink

No, I said Windows 98 Simulator.
I run Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit and my next Scratch project is a Windows 98 simulator. All I know is that my first project is having the problem. I don't know if it's just that project or if all my other (work-in-progress) projects share the same issue.
Thanks,
WindozeNT

EDIT: Just got some Java. I still get errors. I can view projects online without IE crashing, but still can't upload. Another problem I start to face is that when I download projects, Scratch says "Message Not Understood: >" or "Key Not Found". What is going on here?

Okay, My bad  roll  I thought you were running Windows 98  tongue

As far as uploading goes, if you haven't tried my tips, consider them.

Weird, I've never heard of any trouble downloading projects, I guess someone else may have to help you on that error topic...

Well anyway, I hope I've been a little help to you, and hopefully someone else will be able to help more!  wink

Yes, you have helped alot! I still face that issue. Hopefully, a reboot of the server tomorrow will clear this up. As for projects downloaded, it is just plain annoying how Scratch can't understand the binary. My guess is the format for reading code in the project and Scratch 1.4's format of reading code was different because maybe the project was made in an older version of Scratch with older format standards, thus causing a conflict with the two but IDK. Can someone tell Kesuli to tell me what version he used for "Windown XD Prosuckional"? Then, I'll read the chanelog to see if I can pinpoint the problem. If the version is current Scratch, this will be a mystery of the worlds.
Thanks,
WindozeNT.

Re: Server Times Out When Uploading...

Kesuli used Scratch 1.4 if thats what you wanted to know, and any older projects made in 1.3, 1.2, etc. will still work in Scratch 1.4 when downloaded. I can download projects with Scratch 1.4 fine. I wonder if anyone is having the same problems as you. There could be a corrupted Scratch file, maybe consider re-downloading Scratch 1.4.

Re: Server Times Out When Uploading...

I've think I've found out what might be causing it.
During the point where it prepares for upload, the project saves itself and makes the uploader instantly say "Uploading 252 Kbytes...", "Connecting to Scratch.mit.edu" and "Requesting from Server..." all in a quick 1 second succession. Then it hangs at "Data Sent. Waiting for Response..." and crashes with "Failed: Unkown Reason." I think the save in that point causes it to mess up. Is this it?

But it loads my projects perfectly. The only problem is downloaded projects. And how do you find out what version of Scratch is used in projects?

For projects made in Scratch 1.3 and 1.4, there is a little "badge" on the script picture, near where you can download the project saying the version. The 1.3 "badges" are a light blue color, and the 1.4 "badges" are a dark green color.

EDIT: This is what they look like:

Re: Server Times Out When Uploading...

Downloading 33 MB files takes me 1-2 weeks for download with resumption. I couldn't get Scratch without my download manager. IE and FF leave behind broken downloads if it loses connections while downloading or if I have to disconnect while downloading so someone can make a call. Rarely does anything get corrupt using a download manager using resumption. As long as it installs and runs without errors phsyically showing, it's 100% working to me, but this could be an exception. Is the Scratch image file bad? (C:\Program Files (x86)\Scratch\Scratch.image)

Re: Server Times Out When Uploading...

I wouldn't know if the image file is bad. I guess you are kind of in a weird situation at the moment because dial-up is not commonly used anymore. Usually if something goes wrong like this, it is recommended to re-download Scratch. With a high speed internet connection, it only takes seconds.

And what makes it really sad is I live in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by miles of trees, and high-speed internet dosen't even exist in my wildest dreams.  sad  I hate dial-up.

Possible Solution #1 - If you live near a public library that has free access to computers with high speed internet (or something faster than dial-up), you can download Scratch onto a flash drive or CD, then copy the files onto your computer.

Yet another Infinite Loop of Time-Outs. *sigh* Will I ever be able to share my projects? Perhaps there should be an online uploader rather than in-program uploaders...?

I really appreciate that you won't give up, and I think everyone should be able to share their projects on Scratch no matter where they live. Right now there is no online uploading tool, but what I recommend now is contacting the Scratch Team, as they would be even more greatful to help. Describe your situation in detail, and ask them what they can do to help. In the near future, they may accept you to send attachments to them so they can post the projects for you or develop a tool for those with dial-up internet connections

Re: Server Times Out When Uploading...

Well I could, but in the rules:
1. No downloading. It's a srtict no-nonsense network that blocks EXE files, and
2. You have to be the ol' great 'n' holy system admin to use those things. They're scared of hackers that'll crash the system or network.
Result: It's hopeless there. Wal-Mart's Windows 7 demos are a close win, but no i-net.
As of other places, they keep people out from EXE downloading. It's all because of virus fear, although Scratch isn't a virus or any kind of malware; It's a Java Language Compiler (JLC) developed by educational people (MIT).
