Re: The Scratch Wiki

I'd like to contribute to the Scratch Wiki. I was a previous contributor, and I would hate not to expand the Wiki.  wink

I'm really sorry. I'm going to talk to andres about this - because andres created those 4 new accounts, without my permission, and forgot some others. I'll make sure he doesn't create any other accounts, so no mistakes like that happen  wink

Yes, but what if perhaps, somebody who didn't use the forums or upload about it found it, but still found it before you?

It's not something we can officially confirm - and I don't think it really matters.

Being active on the forums has absolutely no affect, and makes no difference on my decision to add you to the wiki.

And what do you mean by writing a few articles on "that"?

Do you mean, your activity on the forums, or the forums itself?

The forums themselves. Also, I could write an article on making a scratch mod, if it helps.

It's times like this when I wish the Scratch site had private messages.

Luc, my friend, you have created a hugely valuable resource for Scratchers.  Please don't ruin it (and make enemies) by power tripping.

It was obvious to me (as an uninvolved outisder) that what waveOSBeta meant was not "I'm entitled to special treatment because I'm active in the forums" but rather "the forums are my area of expertise and the thing I'd contribute articles about."

I'm not saying "don't exercise authority as an administrator of the wiki."  I'm saying not to be jealous about your authority.  [If you think "jealous" means "envious," look it up.  smile  ]  If that's not what you're doing in your head, then let me, as a friend, make you aware that that's how your recent posts sound, at least to one reader.

Well, for the first message you quoted, I have no comment.

For the second message you quoted, you have to understand, that even me and andres were talking about it, and we work collaboratively as managers as the wiki. We decided that if either of us are going to create any accounts, than we have to email each other to confirm it first. I did that for all of the other accounts - but he didn't do it for some of them - so that got me angry.

For the third message you quoted, that was my bad. I shouldn't have said my, but rather, should have been our - I got carried away.

Does that make sense? D:

Re: The Scratch Wiki

I'm sorry to have upset you.  And, as I said, I would much rather have upset you in private.  hmm

Lucario621 wrote:

I just think that, especially for people with long histories of constructive engagement with the Scratch community, "we'll have to think about it" (not your exact words but that's how they sound) is pretty unwelcoming. (And it's really confusing when it comes after "Sure," in your messages!)  If it were my wiki, I'd be saying "sure, thanks for wanting to help and welcome aboard!" to such people.

I do think it's okay to disinvite known spammers or vandals.  But mostly I don't think people should have to jump through hoops to prove their worth, and the process is pretty pro forma anyway -- mostly people are saying "I want to help" and that seems to be good enough.  So making it sound as if there's a good chance of being rejected just makes the process seem more unpleasant than it actually is.

And why are people calling me Luc again? It makes me feel stupid like a toddler or something!

I apologize.  I saw other people doing it and figured that was what you wanted/expected.  (Is "Lucario" okay?  I feel like an idiot in a bad science fiction movie calling someone "Lucario621.")  For what it's worth, I meant no disrespect. I wish my name lent itself to one-syllable nicknaming!  smile  (Although some of my friends do call me "B H" because back in ancient times when logins were limited to six (or sometimes three) letters, everybody called everybody in the computing world by their initials.  That's still my login on my work computer, but the silly Scratch site wouldn't let me use it.)

EDIT:  P.S., sorry, something I forgot to say:  Maybe you and the other admins are thinking that it's good to go through the motions of considering everyone so that when the rare case of a known vandal does come up, you can say no without him or her feeling singled out.  But I think in such cases the person should feel singled out.  Being mistrusted is a natural consequence of behaving in an untrustworthy manner.  (Parents and teachers misuse the phrase "natural consequence" a lot these days, but this really is one.  It's important in the story of the Boy Who Cried Wolf that the other people in the town didn't decide not to trust him; they just really didn't!)

Re: The Scratch Wiki

* Why do you want to join the Scratch Wiki?
    * How would you help the Scratch Wiki by becoming a contributor?

1. I would like to contribute to the knowledge of Scratch and make things easier for new users.
2. I would fix any mistakes (though I hope there's not many) and add stuff that no one else has yet.

Yeah, I want to join, but I stink at speeches.

The problem is, there's always a possibility that a user will NOT be allowed on the team - so I don't want to 100% guarantee it, and then say "Sorry, you've had quite a ban history in the Scratch community, so your request has been declined". But, at the same time, I don't want to be like the people on the "Become a Curator on the Scratch Homepage" thread, and not respond, except private notifications. So that's really the best I can personally come up with  hmm
