Official Website Spam Cleanup 2010

Hi! I noticed that there is a lot of spam these days. I then read one of Chrischb's topics on spam. Then, that's how I got inspired to do this!  big_smile  Here's his topic, quoted in this:

Chrischb's topic says:
When you happen to see a thread/forum actively posted in by someone with an odd username, check it.

But how do you know what usernames they use?
Read!  big_smile

The Guidebook Says:

Look for the following:
• All lowercase (laptopsfree)
• Include names (petercars)
• Include commonly sold items (pauls_computers)

Examples:

grocerytile10
office_plus

Once you arrive at the user's post, look for the following:

The Guidebook Says:

• A link (very crucial! This makes it commercial spam)
• Lousy grammar (very common)
• No attempts to hide (lazy...)
• Recently registered (they should be less than a day old)
• Fake signature lines (--------, ......., _ _ _ _ _)
• FAIL attempts to fit in

Beware of the following:

• Hidden links (!)
• Old users (17/2/07)

Yay! Once you've found your commercial spammer, clickeh teh Report button...

You can type in anything you want there; the moderators don't care. Put your message in all caps, shout - who cares?  big_smile  Just make sure you get the point across properly, and don't type 98368325 characters in your report.

Once you report that post, check how many posts they have. If they have more, find them all and REPORT THEM!!!

But remember: don't mention a commercial spammer's username. It's not respectful, so it'll get edited... even though they're not even human. D:

Now for some example posts - these imitations were all rated 10/10 in this thread.

nice idea! i really want to see this implemented.

great work guys
i'm looking forward to seeing your end result

I am a new user here and everyone seems really cool and friendly. I noticed that lots of users give advice, so I thought I'd give some of my own. If you want tips on losing weight, you should go to HeathCenter. It is a great site and it really helped me!

Here are some good places to look - commercial spammers like them.

The Guidebook Says:

-Announcements Forum
  -Curator speech thread
-New Scratch Members Forum
  -Topmost stickies
-Show and Tell Forum
  -Topmost stickies, sometimes new threads
-All about Scratch
  -New threads, normal threads
-Miscellaneous
  -Normal threads

You can go looking for them if you want.

At the end is what I got inspired by. This is what I think spam is:

My Whole Enchilada Guide says:
Spam[sp*AM] Spam-Stupid Pointless Annoying Messages or linking to commercial sites. Spam-A Hawaiian meat meal.Jonothanpb reported some commercial spam. Chris went to Hawaii to visit some relatives, and while he was there he tasted spam.

You see? We need to get working on reporting it. The way you should report it:

Reporter wrote:

I have reported pauls_computers for commercial spam.

Cheddargirl inspired me:

Reporter wrote:

AHHHH! PAULS_COMPUTERS IS TRYING TO TAKE OVER SCRATCH WITH COMMERCIAL SPAM!!! RUN FER YER LIVES!!!!

We need people to help! I'll post the list:

The List: ✓ Means that they have reported back and are helping the others. ☐ Means still reporting. ♡ Means doing all of a certain place, still checking. ♥ Means doing all of a certain place, done checking.

Great idea - just remember not to say any names of commercial spammers you have reported publicly. After all, we have to respect everyone's feelings, even if they turn out to be a commercial spammer.  smile

Oh - I forgot to say earlier. Sometimes, spammers open galleries for spamming in - if you see any spammers with galleries, be sure to mention that in your report  smile

I'll add that! Also, what sections will you be working in? I'll be working in all forums, so I'll have to add that.  big_smile  Will you be on the website and forums?

Re: Official Website Spam Cleanup 2010

I look at most new posts anyway, so I'll say all. And I nearly always check if the spammer has any projects or galleries before I ban them.  smile

Also - beware of signatures. sometimes, a spammer registers, posts an on topic post ("Hi, I'm new!", for example), then comes back after they can get a signature, so they can spam in there. It's rare, but I've seen it happen.

That's why there is a signatures section! I'll add you to all.

I'll try New Scratch Members! Oh yeah, people.......... hmm  If you have seen any projects of mine....They're old. You said spammers are old, so I just want to clarify that I've never commercial spammed. (I once told people to go on freerice, but that was a mistake and I didn't mean to.....)  big_smile   I am the SPAM bounty hunter!

Well, you can help clean up spam already by simply reporting any spam posts you find... I can't stress how helpful it is!
