my new version of scratch coming soon

hello all scratchers,
I am making a new version of scratch. It will include block coding/building AND cloning and advanced variable blocks. it will have 4-5 new categories(probably): Web and files, Media, procedures , dialogs and (maybe) GUI. It will have duplication blocks, script control (procedures), and more. you will able to make variables and lists with blocks. and of course, you will even (maybe) be able to IMPORT BLOCKS!!! this will mean that you will be able to make blocks and be able to export them and import. they will probably be stored as a .txt file. I dont know what to call it though. maybe...... sad  i cant think of anything. if you would like to help, please post what experience you have in scratch modding. i will probably accept 5-6 people. Thanks

I don't program in Squeak, sorry D:

Yes, BYOB and Panther are the only mods that deserve to exist.  roll

Seriously though, as ScratchReallyRocks said, people should be free to express their creativity. As long as it shows some innovation it's ok.

Re: my new version of scratch coming soon

I think it is fine to have as many mods as people want to make. Don't discourage creativity. This is aimed to anyone who wasn't being very kind to people learning about Squeak.

yup, mods are fine as long as the programmers of that mod are actually learning and coding at least most of it themselves. Being creative is all part if scratch  smile

Im not condeming your mod, im just curious how you're going to do that block coding/building. Are you adapting/using the panther system, or are you going for a more BYOB approach to it?

not sure yet. so far it has 4 new blocks: get (date), letters () - () of (hello world), () raised to (), and if <> then () else ().

Awesome idea! do you want to help. it could be like scratch + panther! you would get a lot of credit) there could be like a BASE program with a couple of features, then like downloadable files. you would go to file-> import mod and choose the file. maybe .txt. and maybe you could even make your own mods! I hope you will help.

Wait... do I want to HELP?! I came up with the idea... but enough arguing! Let's discuss more important things.

I think there should be a "Patches" menu which looks something like this:

Patches
[ x ] first-class data
[   ] file I/O blocks
[ x ] mesh blocks
[ x ] resizeable canvas
--------------------------
get new patches...
install a patch...

And "get new patches..." would bring you to a little site (I'll make it) which has a bunch of different patches which can be searched or browsed through by category, popularity, etc. and then downloaded and installed in this new Scratch derivative.

EDIT: the checkbox/square root sign didn't turn out too well: √ I'm replacing them with x's

OK, I see you have added the get {} block, have you added anything else? (sorry, just glanced quickly)

I don't think we should add anything new to start, just the framework for installing new patches.

EDIT: Oh, save stage are to sprite... I think we should make one of the patches (or a series) "Blocks, blocks, and more blocks!" for the people who want TONS of blocks.

Re: my new version of scratch coming soon

I'd want to help make this, I don't know Squeak very well (I'm teaching myself though) but I can help with anything else.

And adding on to nXIII's idea, (I'm not sure if this is what you mean or not) but I think there should be a site for downloading new blocks, so that your block panes don't get too filled up and so you only have the blocks you need.

Good idea, ScratchReallyROCKS! I never thought about having downloadable blocks too! So, in the menus it would look like:

Patches

blocks >

[ x ] join mesh
[   ] host mesh
[ x ] mesh IP address
more...

UI features >

[ x ] resizeable stage
[   ] palette controls
[   ] shiny skin v1.2

miscellaneous features >

[   ] Squeak accessories
[ x ] developer's tool pack

-----------
get new patches...
install a patch...

Re: my new version of scratch coming soon

So how is the downloading blocks thing going to work? Never mind. I bet a lot of people could program it.

Another idea, what if you could make blocks online, so you could edit all the inputs and the appearance. Also, what if (I'm putting in a lot of 'what if's'  wink  ) you could fill out an info sheet (online) about the block, and then it would build it for you, then you wouldn't have to spend all your time programming if you were rushing to get somewhere or something.
