BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

What mod is your favorite, why, and why not the others?

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

I'd say panther because they put a lot of thought into it and it includes some of it's own things and compensates by having things like what the other ones do.

Wait, are you just posting this to see who likes panther?

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

I think BYOB and Panther are the only real serious mods... just my opinion.

BYOB = most advanced
PANTHER = most comfortable - very easy to use  smile

^ they are also both group projects, we need more teamwork!  big_smile

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

I don't think I can pick a favorite. They all have very different purposes. I use some for one thing and some for another.

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

Hey, don't put Peck into this! I don't want to be a part of "no this is better!" "but that has more blocks!" "at least this didn't even steal any!" "at least this gave credit" and so on.

Please, don't include Peck, I don't even see how it got grouped into "the great mods"

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

id say panther for 3 reasons

1) comforatble and easy to use
2) lots of teamwork, and most blocks out there have just been stolen from them
3) i've never tried BYOB 2.99, the other top contender

also, you ought to take slash offa that list.  its really just terrible.

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

Someone should take the byob feature and the extra blocks in byob and join them with panther. Then that'll be the ultimate mod. Add in some nxt support via python and you've got the greatest mod eve.r

B-Y-O-B! You're what we want Scratch to be!

Seriously, though, all these mods serve different purposes, and all of them are excellent. However I have managed to squeeze the most use out of BYOB.

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

I'd say, and everyone has evened out these votes, that BYOB 3 and Panther 1.0 are the best. They are the only two mods on that list that have many new block, features, etc.

I am not trying to say that the other mods are not good, it's just that based on features, BYOB and Panther win.

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

My Top 5

First: Definitely PANTHER. It has the most blocks and is easy to use!
Second: I dunno... BYOB. The ability to make own blocks is cool.
Third: If BYOB is the second, LINE the third. It has some hilarious features and is by me  tongue
Fourth: STREAK    It has cool blocks.
Fifth: LION... Coded by me.
Then the others I tried... PECK (just a bit cool)
SQUIRREL (if it's released  tongue )
SLASH (It has only stolen blocks and is SO hard to use.)

I choose BYOB. We should be able to control NXTs with BYOB/Scratch.

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

I say BYOB. It's more sort of official, and stays with the idea of not adding too many new features, so new users don't get very confused with all of the functions, while still having a 'high ceiling', if you know what I mean  wink .

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

BYOB and Panther are tied - both have really useful blocks and look really professional. Streak started the whole mod trend IIRC, but doesn't have many good blocks. Slash is a bunch of stolen blocks from what I've heard, but I've never tried it.

Not that I'm picking on Slash or anything, but it alos has a strange new paint job and a whacky piano on the top of the screen.

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

I'd say BYOB and Panther are best.
BYOB has nice extra blocks and easy block builder.
Panther has fantastic extra blocks but difficult block builder.

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

I think I tie Panther and BYOB because, even as a Panther developer, I think BYOB is better at some things. I love BYOB because turning scripts into atomic blocks makes scripting neater and faster. The first-classiness is something really special too as so much more can be done with BYOB than Scratch. There's also the sense that it's still easy to use for young programmers starting out - which is what Scratch is all about. Panther, on the other hand, is not really as appropriate for users starting to use Scratch but I think it makes up for it with the very, very high ceiling. I use Panther when I want to make a game or a complex piece of software because, to a user with some smalltalk knowledge or acess to the block library, there are near-limitless possibilities in Panther because anything smalltalk can do can be turned into a block!

Re: BYOB vs Streak vs Slash vs Panther

I am offended.  tongue
Not a single person in this thread has mentioned Bingo.

I believe Bingo, Panther and BYOB are the top three Scratch mods.

Bingo has many original, added blocks. Lately, I've also been focusing on UI and non-block-related features, a bit like BYOB.

Panther has a very good choice of blocks, I gather most of those being original, and has the very useful Smalltalk coding feature.

BYOB is the inimitable marvel of interface coding by Jens and Co.
It's simple, yet has the basis of the more advanced languages with its methods and functions. First-class really brings the level up too.

IMHO, Slash is really not a proper mod, in the style of Scratch. Way too informal and cliché. The rest of the mods are just not worth the effort, with a few exceptions. It's been a mod-boom, literally  big_smile

Streak has original blocks and a few interface changes. What more would you expect from the fashion starter, though? I think the creator of Streak has done more than enough  smile
