Questions about Scratch community moderator elections...

Lots of Scratchers have expressed a desire to help out with moderation on the Scratch forums and website. In the past we've chosen Scratchers to fill those roles. That worked really well, but we wanted a way to get more input from the community and involve them in the process of selecting moderators.

http://info.scratch.mit.edu/Community_Moderators

We're holding elections next week for 4 more Scratch community moderators. (The current forum mods will stay mods for as long as they like). Questions? Read the page linked above, then ask on this thread.

Scratch On!

Re: Questions about Scratch community moderator elections...

A few comments:

-Cool icon, with the Scratch Cat and Gobo! :3

-I like how you made it just for 6 months, so if somebody doesn't do a good job, or if they leave or lose interest, they can leave.

-There's some underlined text that says on this thread, but there's no link  tongue  I bet you're going to fix that soon...

So overall, I like the idea. Although I personally don't think we need more mods because in my opinion, mods only have a slightly higher rank in authority, and have a few more tools to keep the community close, so the current mods already fulfill all of those very well.

Two things about that:
1. I hate to sound like a nag, but terms are only 4 months. I do agree with you though that the term thing is a good idea, and 4 months may be even better than 6 if someone loses interest faster.
2. I do think we need more mods around here, with Lanie and MRN's disappearances as of late. I also haven't really seen cheddargirl around, and because of that, it's taking a lot longer for topics that need to be closed on here to be closed.

Cool! Here is the thread where Scratchers can announce their intention to run for community moderator.

That's the thing... mods don't care about miscellaneous - which is a good thing. So although they may not 'seem' active, by posting on miscellaneous, believe me, THEY ARE HERE. PADDLE2SEE AND CHEDDARGIRL WILL FIND YOU XD. As for closing topics, you have the facts all wrong. Ever heard of the 'report' button? Yeah - the one used for closing topics. Well, I have requested closure many of my threads before, believe me, from being bumped up, or other reasons - and each time I used the report to say "Close this please", it's always been done within a matter of minutes. People just have to learn to use the magical button.

OK. I guess that makes two application speeches/essays I've got to do today. (I've got one for something in school to do)

Rofl. I don't think you have to do a speech though.

It says "just a brief statement" not a "preamble"  tongue .

I have to disagree with that statement - we care quite a lot about miscellaneous.  smile  But that's a topic for another thread. This thread is just for questions about the Scratch community moderator elections. Thanks!

That does make a lot of sense. People don't often use the report button. I just said that because I know of at least one thread where there were about 5-7 posts in 15-20 minutes asking for the thread to be closed, and it took a while to be closed. I'm just saying that although people SHOULD use the report button, they don't most of the time, and there should be more mods to be able to read those posts and then close the thread.

It actually says "short essay".

Is there any way to vote for yourself? Because I don't think that would be fair in the slightest.

Sure, you can vote for yourself! That's possible in most elections. It will take a lot more votes than one to win though.

And it's also a limit to online voting systems. Without individual IP identification and blocking people cannot be blocked from doing this.

I will be writing a speech soon.  smile

I would like to try for scratch mod. Lately most of my time has been spent flagging comments on projects and on the forums. I am not famous, but what does being famous have to do with being a good mod? Do you have to know how to create good projects to ban users who post inappropriate content for the scratch community?  I think that I would be a good mod because, one I have been on scratch and have learned a lot from my mistakes. Scratch has helped me, and I want it so stay that way and help others too! So I'm not gonna make a big flowery speech instead I will just tell you what I will do. I will be on scratch for over 3 hours a day, I will patrol the forums, and flag inappropriate content. I have helped many users that can't figure out how a block works and have showed them how they can improve their projects. I have summed up everything I have done. Please vote for me for the new scratch mod! Thanks for reading this post!

Re: Questions about Scratch community moderator elections...

I'm worried that this might be a corrupt election. See, the majority of users post more in the "Miscellaneous" forums than not, correct? And if a user *doesn't* post in the Miscellaneous forum, but has been chosen as a near-finalist in the election, then they will be lesser-known to most users, and therefore, get less votes. In essence, they are not getting votes for being more helpful than not.

Well we shall see how it turns out, but until then let's see who the candidates are.

In my opinion this system has been set up to combat the problem imposed by the "Miscellaneous" forum section which we have seen examples of recently. The scratch team and moderators have recently been under a lot of stress with this section, as it is even more popular than the "Text Based Games" section.

Re: Questions about Scratch community moderator elections...

Your post says "no other comments please." Does that mean no speeches or no posts that aren't people applying? I'm just curious- I haven't decided if I will run or not.

EDIT: Dang it! I used the wrong "your" ("you're" instead of "your") and this got quoted a bunch of times! Oops...

I think that until you've been chosen as one of the finalists - for lack of a better term - you shouldn't post any sort of speeches. After that, you're trying to convince people to vote for you, so I think those should be okay.
