Re: "Scratch Modifications" forum.

I disagree... let me explain:

I really do think that all these modifications as well as block hacking topics are a craze, just like the way 1s1s projects are the rage now, and other programming styles and ideas come in and out of fashion, this will die down. That means that you're left with a dead forum. I do find all the new mods mildly annoying (hypocritical as that is) and I definetly think that if people MUST post code for new blocks, it should be confined to ONE TOPIC, not the many ones that have sprung up.

If the modding craze continues then perhaps a new thread is a neat idea, but I think that it's not going to last all that long, then we can get back to complaining about people posting things here that aren't advanced at all.

Re: "Scratch Modifications" forum.

Good points, and great discussion!
I can see the advantage of having a forum for mods. I also see the disadvantage of having more and more forums, which means more places that mod(erators)s need to check, more places that commercial spammers can leave spam. So - it may be a good idea, but it doesn't come without any cost. We have to balance the benefits against the costs.

If the modding craze continues, and proves not to be just a fad, we'll be more likely to add a new forum for it. But the success of the modding movement depends on how well Scratchers can coordinate their efforts, and collaborate to make high quality lasting mods.... Can they do it?  I hope so!  But we'll just have to wait and see how it goes!

Re: "Scratch Modifications" forum.

I know this thread is a bit old now, but I have another reason why there shouldn't be a new forum topic for mods:

quite frankly, all these mods are a bit annoying, and by providing a seperate section, we encourage them. think about how certain things like 1s1s go in and out of fashion, but the things that are displayed on the front page like top remixed is constantly in fashion, by providing a seperate forum section, you are kinda ensuring that they never go out of fashion.

Re: "Scratch Modifications" forum.

I agree. While it's true that Scratch mods are all the rage at the moment, there will always be someone interested in tinkering with Scratch who would benefit from having these topics together in one place. I would name it "Extending Scratch" rather than "Scratch Mods" since we should keep in mind that Squeak's days are numbered anyway  wink

Re: "Scratch Modifications" forum.

Just adding my support to this suggestion

Scratch Mods are a valid topic and need their own forum.  Personally I'm not a fan, and definitely don't trust them - too many people trying to out-mod each other but very few making a valuable contribution for the wider Scratch community.

Keep scratch pure and use the advanced topics forum to help people with real Scratch queries and solutions!

Re: "Scratch Modifications" forum.

Good idea! The mods could discuss more private matters with each other, and users could report some problems they've been having because of other users without them feeling like there'll be backlash.

If you're meaning mods as in Forum Mods, Scratch Team, etc... there already is somewhere like that  smile . The suggestion here was that there should be a forum for modifications  wink

Oops... I guess I support the actual meaning too. People could get ideas, share their work, and collaborate on different modifications.

Re: "Scratch Modifications" forum.

I found away to solve the problem I created a site for Scratch Mods. There are forums and it also lists all of the Scratch Mods.

It it here http://www.scratchmods.webs.com/

Find someone post count. Click posts under username. Find number of pages. Times that by 40 for min and 60 for max and you have a rough estimate of post count.

Users would still be more prone to posting in the "official" forums rather than those not endorsed by the Scratch team. Plus, posting on these forums is all the easier for the time being.

I agree, but I think it would be better to have a "general programming" forum for
things like c++, flash, basic, etc.
*goes and posts it now*
