Most of the time I do #2.

I start from the top.

I start from bottom to top (oldest to most recent).  I read all replies on other people's projects before I read comments on my own projects.  I skip all friend requests then read them last.

I always read them oldest to newest, because I figure the oldest ones have been waiting the longest to be answered. *shrug*

There's really no reason for it other than that. ;D

I pick at what's interesting in a random order and continue up randomly so I finish them all. I'm systematic.

Why not?  Deleting them is a lot easier to keep track of, and I think once the scratch team made everyone delete their messages because it was taking up too much server space and slowing down the site.  I never understood why people don't delete messages...
