I'm sure many of us on Scratch know about "RPGs". They started about 2 years ago, and now there are about a hundred and counting.
I myself RPG a lot. It's loads of fun and has inspired me. I have made great friends through them in the past and it's great.
Recently, though, I have noticed a lot of new Scratchers to this website. The case is often a Scratch user's friend or relation who was recommended to join. I noted that the first thing they did was not download Scratch and start making projects, all they did was sign up for an RPG and start chatting.
There seem to be a growing number of these people, which worries me. I try to politely remind them that Scratch is all about Imagine, program, share, but they don't seem to understand. The only time they ever post a project is a character bio for one of the RPGs they've joined. Of course, this doesn't affect me in any way, but I'm worried that Scratch is entering the RPG Generation. Day after day I see more RPG related projects on the Newest list than games and animations. Are new Scratchers getting the wrong message? Do you think that Scratch will eventually become a giant chat site?
A few months ago I was talking with BigGreenHelp, and she was going on about how RPGs are vital to the Scratch website. She claims that at least 5 users have quit because their favorite RPGs died. I don't believe this myself but that's a matter of opinion I guess.
What do you think? Should we encourage people to focus on making projects? Do you believe that people will remember the way of Scratch and we shouldn't panic? Or do you think that we should discourage RPGs entirely? Post your opinions below.

This is kinda related to this thread
http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=30902
I think this is the sort of site scratch has become now, a sort of play site for kids. Most of the people who liked programming are gone or just severely outnumbered by people who want to make simple pictures or animations. I don't think encouragement has a lot to do with anything, people just go with what they are familiar with and it seems a lot are familiar with pretend cat games or what have you.
I do think this kind of defeats the purpose of scratch which is to learn the basics of programming.

Midnight, dont listen to bullies. There will always be people in your life that will be nice. Some wont be. Your projects are good; I've seen them. But Maki is right; scratch is not ll about RPGing, sadly. I rpg alot, but I make projects, too. Its like a balance.

I have not failed,i have only found 7,000 ways that will not work. Nor will i ever fail, unless the great Earth decides i've tried enough and cuts my string loose. (Me & Benjamin Franklin combined quote)

Hey, I have to deal with hate comments every day. XD
Just shrug it off, look on the bright side and continue with your life.

What is an 'RPG'?

An RPG is a Role Playing Game, where you take control of a character and interact with others.
It can be done on:
• Pencil and paper with friends
• A forum thread
• A game
And so on. The RPGs swarming Scratch are the ones that take place on a gallery where you chat (with bad grammar) and basically start a flame war.
I think RPGs are fun, as long as the players are friends and make intellegible posts. Otherwise... oh, I'll just post an example:
User 1: Krana steped throgh teh leafs.
User 2: KRANA IS STUPID I WANT TEH NAMMEEE!!!!
User 3: Quiet! Trophy snifffed the air, hungray.
User 1: YOU CANT HAV KRANA!
User 2: OH YES I CAN!!!
User 3: Trophy entered teh cave, and felled.
User 1: "You landed on meh!" Krana cryed.
Well... that's how I feel sometimes.

Let's admit it - Scratch is going crazy. In the old days the community was made of dedicated Scratchers, who actually did what Scratch was for - programming. But now it's completely different - the forums and the users are going crazy. Let's examine the two seperately:
• The forums. In the later part of 2008 the Inspiration and More forum was made. This was horrible - users flocked to the new forum, ignoring the other forums where they could actually do something useful. They would just chat, ignoring the rest of the forums. It's horrible - and these are the Scratch Forums! Surely people should be flocking to All About Scratch, where they can be in a Scratch-related place?
Then another bad step: The Text-Based Games. Think about it! In the Scratch forums, they added a forum for games! But let's not deny it - they created the Text-Based Games because people were posting games in Inspiration and More. But their way to take action against those games was disasterous.
Oh, it was horrible. But luckily, Inspiration and More and the Text-Based Games were closed. Four new forums were made - Collaboration, Requests, Project Ideas and (the horror) Miscellaneous. Thankfully, no replacement forum was made for the Text-Based Games (they made a seperate forum for it, but since it's away from the rest of the website that's fine (sort of) ). Anyway, most of the damage was fixed - but the Miscellaneous forum still exists. *sigh* But enough about that.
• The users. Through Scratch's history, the users have changed a whole lot. Let's examine it closer.
• The '07ers: Users who busied themselves with Scratch programming. They helped a lot on the website, including the forums.
• The '08ers: Users who did some Scratch programming, but were more active and chatty (Inspiration and More probably had an effect).
• The '09ers: People who didn't do as much programming, and were RPG addicts (probably the Text-Based Games) and forum addicts (probably Inspiration and More). Not that great...
No offense to any of the later users - I'm talking about the whole group, not about specific users.
Anyway - you see how it went? The earlier users were more of the programming type, always wanting to help and contribute, while the later users were more of the forum addicts who weren't that helpful. Why can't we have users that actually care about Scratch? *sigh*
That's just my opinion, but it sure seems like it's right, from what I've seen.

I wonder where these people are coming from. Nearly all of the remaining older users are programmers, but along the way it got switched around and now the programmers are slowly getting outnumbered. Why are these so-called RPGers joining a programming site in the first place?
Offline
Good question...
Here are some possible/probable/whatever reasons why:
1. Their friends joined.
2. Ooh, we can chat on this site!
3. Their older sibling joined.
4. I'll just join for the forums...

From now on I'm gonna stop doing those stupid remix chain projects, (unless it means something to me.) and I'll upload more RPG bios on DeviantArt instead of Scratch. I'll spend more time programming than making animations and RPing.

I think the 18 years thing only applies to buying and selling art. Otherwise it would do something about its majority of users who are below 18.

I see. (In actuality, I just heard that 18+ thing from Paddle, and have never been to the site myself).

lmho. I'm talking about the RPGers. How they might learn to make proper games than RPGs.

What other games are there than RPGs?

Just go to your project and disable comments and tagging...

I think RPGing is fun, as long as you make sure rules are set in place and followed(NO POWERPLAYING) and it's not causing too many problems. I enjoy RPing in my freetime.
Offline
Hmm... I think that RPGs are a good way to imagine, not nessicarily program, and maybe sharing a little bit.
