a. This is interesting. I have better success sending my project at times not many people are uploading projects (late at night, school time, etc.) than at typical times of day (Weekends, afternoons, etc.)
b. This glitch has been occuring for me continuously (I haven't been able to upload a single project) since late December.
c. INTERESTING FACT: I have NO trouble whatsoever uploading my project on another computer of mine that has Windows XP. This computer has NO antivirus software (Norton is expired)
d. Although the bug occured when I had Windows Vista, it only happened occasionally, while with Windows 7 it happens continuously.
I realize I just added more confusion than before, but all those facts are COMPLETELY true.

Great post! This has lots of detail, which is what we need to try and isolate this problem. We're setting up a Windows 7 testing machine here to see if we can reproduce the problem. shadow_7283, can you send a Scratch project that you are having trouble sharing to help@scratch.mit.edu so we can use it do some more testing? Thanks!

well im just gonna wipe everything from my computer and start over. Theres way more damage to my computer that just scratch. Would that maybe get rid of the "Unknown Reason"?

I feel dumb asking, but you just want me to attach a file right? I'll send you one as soon as possible...
EDIT: This bug seems to be doing its best to stop us from solving it. I found a project I was planning on uploading (it had failed several times before) and it uploaded! Then I tried another of my un-uploaded projects, and it failed. I'll send you the one that failed though.
NOTE: Unfortunately, I DON'T have an email adress on this computer, nor do I have a yahoo or gmail. I am going to email it through my other computer (the one with XP that is working fine). I don't think it will affect the project at all because I will transfer it directly from my USB to my email, but I just want to make you aware of it.

I too can only upload files under 300k, also since around last November I think, been a while. I have made other posts about this. Anyway, everything used to work fine when uploading. And currently, all my non-Scratch uploading and downloading STILL works fine. Scratch is specifically the only application that seems affected. I did not have anything to do with bigpond security btw. I have disabled, replaced, turned off, etc everything I could think of with Windows Firewall but still no luck. Hopefully tomorrow evening I can try sending some >300k projects over a completely different connection.
But on the plus side, I've gotten really good at squeezing color graphics down to a minimum size...
I figure for now I will just keep working on projects at home. But honestly, I used to spend a lot of time helping people in the forums and now I rarely log in. Being unable to share your work kinda puts a damper on things I guess.

I had trouble today uploading this project (link to project). It took over 20 attempts. It size was only 700kb compressed and the time of upload was around midnight Scratch time. This was on XP and I've only had the problem before on Vista. I do recall the computer doing a windows update not long ago and before that it worked fine.

This only happened to me once, but it also wouldn't let me save my project so I ended up loosing a lot of work.

2. Scratch 1.4
3. I don't have an antivirus software
4. I think I recieved it like in the afternoon or something, but i can't really remember. Also I was sharing it from home.

Again. Same project, same result: Unknown Reason. This time I got really annoyed and ran every diagnostics tool I had on my computer. And thus was born unto the world... The 17Mb text file with everything I could possibly extract. It's in Polish, but I'm sure you'll make something out of it. Standard stuff: 17:20 GMT, Sharing from London.

Wow - thanks to everyone for providing us with all this information!
This glitch is a tricky one -- very hard to isolate and understand the cause. We'll keep looking into things to try to figure it out. Meanwhile the more data we get the better.

How did the Windows 7 test go?

Not so well, because sharing worked perfectly.

Luckily I'm not having this problem. The only time I got an upload error was when I accidentally kicked the modem and it shut off. Also I got a gash on my leg from the sharp edges of the computer.
Offline
So what about my other theory... time. When I try to upload projects at "busy" times of day (when odds are someone else is also trying to upload) I tend to get the "Failed: Unknown Reason error". If we can find a time that not many other people are online and can get two people to upload a project at once, we might find something out.
Offline
I just thought I'd let the Scratch Team know that this problem isn't gone, though it seems to have improved. I'm still getting this error on occasion, and usually when a project fails to upload once, it will do so many times again.
Offline
It may just be too many computers trying to connect with the Scratch server at once. Isn't the amount it can handle at one time limited? And what with people uploading such large projects these days (with sounds, large images, etc.) I'm sure it must be pretty hard to handle.
Of course, internet connection probably affects the outcome too.
Offline
Great, I am getting the error again. IT seems to have happened to me on only 2 projects, both big ones with alot of sprites and pictures. Any ideas on how to fix it?
Offline
This happened to me too. The only thing i can say is try going into safe mode, and upload it, or Backup your computer to the day before it happened. Or you can always go into recovorey mode, and delete everything...
Offline
With my internet connection, uploading takes >10 seconds.

I un-installed and re-installed Scratch but no luck, I too have been unable to upload since around Nov 09. I really enjoyed Scratch and was participating in the forums, helping a lot of people, etc. But when you can't upload anymore, it is beyond frustrating. I guess I will try making a new account.
