Scratch auto updates thumbs on each and every read of same directory!

I have an auxiliary hard drive with a sub directory of graphics. That in turn is sub divided into 130 folders. All in all, 5,856 graphics roughly 300 Meg. I can see it taking a while to build the original index. But this thing constantly auto updates the directories each time I cross them. Thus taking forever to get my graphics. It don't auto update small directories, why large ones? Is there a way to turn auto update off?

Unfortuantly, no. I know it's very annioing, but Squeak or Scratch does it to make images load faster. And then in that folder, there is a file called "scratchthumbs.db".
