People do it because people say that it brings un-necessary popularity. If we stopped talking about it and making projects about it it would be better. It's basically Large-scale Peer Pressure (I'm doing it because everyone else is).

Threads like this advertise that I Quit projects are good publicity stunts (good for those with little publicity) and annoy people (good for trollers). Personally I think we should ignore them completly, don't post or code anything about it or even mention it or new users will follow suit.
