I've uploaded a series of projects to illustrate Gravity, Velocity, Jumping, etc., in response to the many questions about these subjects that show up in the forums. (I started a gallery, but haven't been able to add my projects for some reason.)
Please feel free to download and have a look at these. They start very simple and I've added features (and fixed bugs) with each new one. The projects all contain lots of comments to help explain what is going on. Here's what there is so far.

Gravity with "Bounce": http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/EdnaC/70950
Dampened Bounce (and a Bug): http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/EdnaC/70950
Bounce and Jump (and a secret): http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/EdnaC/72080
Remember that there are lots of ways to accomplish things in Scratch, there is nothing magical about the way I did things (or the variable names), there are always different ways to do what you want.
