The choice is yours, but it slows down the server. It's advised that you delete them.

I already do because the blue bar is annoying because it follows me around the website and it is right at the top.

Oh, i delete them after i've read them, it's easier to keep track of and then you get that happy feeling of logging on to see new notifications( Yes i know, but oh well). I presumed most people did that anyway.

The most messages I ever had was 4. This was after a week-long holiday. It was also my most popular week. Over the past fortnight I had 2 messages.
