As we all well know, the year is coming to an end. As we all know, spam and "I quit" projects are getting more common. At the beginning of every new year, people make decisions, or "new year resolutions" to make some change in their life. This year, I wish to help Scratch become more of what it used to be: An Educational Tool.
Everytime a user joins, the Scratch cat has another Kitten.
Everytime a user quits for publicity, a kitten dies.
Everytime a user moves on to something else, a kitten grows up.
On January 1st, lets all find a '10er (look at the newest members part of the home page) and write their name down somewhere. Every time you log onto Scratch, check that account, and wait for a project. When you find one, post a constructive comment. Help them in any way you can! Teach them, give them tips, tell them what not to do. We want to keep the number of growing kittens up as high as we can. To many kittens die each day.
DONT START MORE FLAME WARS OR THIS TOPIC IS GOING INTO THE BIN TOO!!!

Let's go through with this. This is a GREAT idea. SAVE SCRATCH FROM FIREY DOOM!

I have some suggestions:
1. Everyone can choose more than one if they want.
2. Everyone tells which new scratcher(s) they chose so two people won't have the same one.
3. It isn't just for 2010. It starts around now.

We could assign everyone to a certain scratcher and move on from there, or everyone does it manually.
This will be fun.

Kind of stalkerish. Yet understandable

It would be best If everyone chose a different "buddy". It would be kinda freaky if everyone went to the same person and started yelling...

Great idea! This will support the growth of the community and make sure people won't quit. I'd do this.

This is such a great idea!
I'm thinking we should have some kind of Welcoming Committee and a page where list all the projects crated by new members of the community so the committee can visit each project and post encouraging comments, offer help and tips for improving their projects.
Good idea!

I thought of it a while ago, but I didn't post about it. I found a few users and greeted them, gave 'em tips and left.

I love this idea. I don't call it helping n00bs, it's helping steer the Scratch future in a positive direction.
Oh, and thanks for putting my quote in your signature, Illusionist.

a committee is a good idea, although it would be nice if the user they are "helping" has given their approval, otherwise it is rather stalker-ish. But yeah, it could have a page where people can sign up. However there should be a minimum amount of time a person must have been the on the scratch website (like 4-6 months) so that people who are brand new aren't helping scratchers who are also new.

great idea! i don't think it should matter if two people get the same person though. its better for the person, and they will feel more confident with themselves if they have a bunch of people commenting on their projects and stuff

This is a great idea! It sort of is like a buddy system. An experienced Scratcher helps out a new Scratcher and shows them around. Then, that new Scratcher, now with knowledge, can help someone else!
Offline
I think a buddy system like this is a great idea! There are a lot of new Scratcher's that can certainly use the attention and assistance. I think it would be great if we could set up a group of experienced Scratcher's that could act as buddies or mentors to new users. Organizing it could get a bit tangled...but that's no reason not to give it a try and see how it works out. I think we will find it rewarding for everybody

I'd love to be part of it, since I had many friends who helped me when I was new. Now look how much I improved!
