Don't panic. All you need to do is go to the Edit menu, and press "compress sounds" and/or "compress images". The more you compress the smaller the size of the project will be.
If you have a lot of sounds, make SURE you compress them. They can count for most of the filesize.

Actually, sometimes you do NOT want to press the "compress sound and images" check box. If the project size is small, and your not sure why it is too big, you need to uncheck the box and for some strange reason, this will usually fix it.

Usually, the biggest space hog on projects are the sound files. You can compress them and that will help some. Be sure that you don't have the same sound file stored in more than one place - that's just a waste of space. You can always use a broadcast message to play the sound from another sprite or the stage. Another thing to try is to use an audio editor like Audacity to cut any music files down in length. A lot of people store maybe 4 minutes of song and then only use 10 or 15 seconds of it in their project - that's space you can recover with a little audio editing

Read above.
Usually the Normal compression level is good, and doesn't make your sounds tinny. For 1943, I used Audacity to shorten the music files - it's free and has alot of neat features.
