Give Tower Defense new Life!

Hello,Brass45 here, and I've got an idea.Tonight I was looking through the scratch games when I typed in "Tower Defense",and to my suprise, only about 6 half-decent projects that were truly TD games came up.Why are tower defense games,so popular in non-scratch computer games, neglected and almost unheard of in scratch?I think the answer is the lack of a sprite duplication block. In real TD games, the tower is copied and put into them game, similar to our stamp block but with scripts. With scratch, you must use numurous sprites for the towers. And yet what I saw made me realize that tower defense still has hope of becoming a popular tag in scratch. At least two of the TD games I saw were of amazing quality, especially Scanner TD(http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/jcubed/361559).And so my challenge to you, scratchers,is to try to bring this genre out of the shadows and into the light, posting the links here and wherever appropriate. In fact,my goal is that to anyone who reads this, spread the message to encourage ANY undersupported genre to be sought out. This task won't be easy, but it only takes one spark to light the fire,no matter how small or seemingly-incompetent it may be.I'll do my best to help. Will you join me?

Re: Give Tower Defense new Life!

I find that with some projects, trying to recreate it in scratch just doesn't work. To make an accurate version of this sort of game, you will need about 20 turret sprites and 1 or 2 bullets for each turret. You will also need about 30-50 enemy sprites. Also, each turret needs to preform a calculation to find which enemy is closest to it and shoot it. There may be 20 bad guys at once so a each turret would have to keep checking the enemies to see if any are close enough to shoot. The lag caused by this will probably prevent a person from making an accurate TD game with scratch. However, a very small scaled down TD may be possible. A good example of a scaled down TD is that scanner TD project.

Exactly.I am aware that trying to make a full-scale one is a waste of time, and even small-scale demos can be fiendishly difficult, but it is still possible to make enough small-scale projects to increase any kind of project genre's popularity slightly(I don't expect any super-dramatic results from any one post unless your a celebrity on scratch and you post it at the right time)

Re: Give Tower Defense new Life!

Already,I've written up a TD game. This one is a mini version of the popular bloons TD.It works online, but the targeting features and spikes don't respond as well as they should after downloading. Here it is:

Re: Give Tower Defense new Life!

I recently found a game that technichly has infinite sprites. It uses lists to record each towers X and Y position,as well as the tower type.A sensor then goes to each position, and if the sensor detects an enemy then it broadcasts to one of 12 bullet sprites to shoot, according to the tower type. The towers don't rotate, but that's a small price to pay for extra towers. Here's the link: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/Awsome-me/531877

Re: Give Tower Defense new Life!

I LOVE TD games. The problem is, on scratch they are REALLY hard to make. I tried one once. I spent a good 4 hours on it but it was tedious and I couldn't make it work right. I give congrats to anyone who can figure it out!  smile

Re: Give Tower Defense new Life!

Everyone's making tower defence games and I'm feeling left out. So I'm going to make a game that isn't a tower defence and it will be much better.  smile

You should really make a TD... Because it would be an awesome project if you did.

Actually,TD games make a very small percentage of scratch games...only about 50 o so actual ones.If you mean that everyone's making one and you feel left out, then there's an easy remedy for that...
