In the new version of scratch, I made a project with the 'sine' block. When I opened the project I made, the 'sine' block was shown as an obsolete block. This happened to me in V 1.2. Do you know what happened?

Did you re-open the project in Scratch v1.1? V1.1 does not have the sine function, and would report it as "obsolete", though it is actually "not implemented yet" in v1.1.
I assume that you have picked up v1.2.1 by now, which fixes various bugs of v1.2

I have an older version of scratch that I teach with at school. I picked up a project that I wanted to walk my students through which uses the a newer version. Is there anything that can be used instead of the "obsolete" that will give the same results?

There is no sine function in versions before v1.2. It is worthwhile to upgrade to v1.2.1 on the school computers.
