VM...Crash...?

Hi there all,
Just a heads up, I am fairly annoyed at the moment so I apologize if anything comes off at rude. Or if this question has already been asked and solve, or if this belongs in the advanced board.

Multiple times, on different projects, I have attempted to import sound. It's a basic MP3 file, it shouldn't be a big hassle. But for whatever reason, Scratch ALWAYS crashes, before doing so they give me this lovely little message:
http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j136/ … 1257637114

First off, I can't find this crash file where my stuff is anyways. Second off, despite the fact I saved my project right before I attempted to upload the MP3, I still can't find the saved version.

I would like to know
1.) Why is Scratch doing this? Is it because I am using Windows Vista?
2.) Is there a way to fix this?
3.) If so, how?
4.) Where in the world IS this crash file it talks about?

Any help would be appreciated. >.<

Re: VM...Crash...?

Hi sinsoo, to my knowledge, the VM issue has not been quite resolved yet, but the discussion about it had been going on here: http://scratch.mit.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?id=25364

Right now, no one has quite figured out what exactly causes this error, other than that it sometimes appears when an mp3 file is being imported into Scratch. Typically, Scratch seems to accept some mp3 files and rejects others regardless of of the OS system being used; if it were my guess, my gut instinct tells me it has to do something with the way the mp3 file is compressed (mp3 files are compressed at different bitrates), although I am not too sure.  hmm

You can try to attempt to get around this issue by converting the file as a .wav file (Windows uncompressed PCM format) - it is in that format Scratch accepts without fail. The other option is to try and find another file of the same song and hope that it will import into Scratch without hassle.

As for finding your project, I do not know. I'll move this over to the 'Troubleshooting' section of the forums, as this is a troubleshooting issue. Hopefully someone there will be able to provide more insight to your problem. Hope this helps.  smile

Re: VM...Crash...?

I don't know why, but this seems to happen on vistas a lot. My XP never got an error like that...

I think the crash file is in the scratch directory...
C:\Program Files\Scratch\crash.dmp
I think.  wink

Hai.

Re: VM...Crash...?

Would it be possible for you to upload to a file sharing site one of the MP3 files that is crashing Scratch?  Then we could try importing it too and see if it does the same thing to us.  It would help determine whether the problem is unique to your installation.
