I find that people using Scratch as Twitter makes me want to jump screaming off a twenty-story building. When Doody posts a project that does nothing but say "i'm sick today" with a sad hamster picture underneath, a part of me dies inside.

LOL, but 100% true. Some people just use Scratch as another Twitter or Facebook.

This really is just another Facebook for me, but with one difference. I come here more.
Problem for me is that my programs take me a long time to make(Months), so I come here and socialize.

People should stop ragging on animations. I am not an animator myself, but if you want to make a good game you usually have to have some type of well-made animation for it to be as succesfull as others. Animation and Programming go hand in hand.
Also, I personally don't think there is anything wrong with coming here to socialize. I do it all the time! But if that's all you're doing and you're not uploading projects or anything then maybe you should leave.
BTW I really like the customize the front page idea. I would like to see more games and things on the front page rather than mostly animations. They're interesting, but easy and you can't learn much from them.
also the scratch community was MUCH better back when there weren't as many people. I always knew who to ask when I had a question, and everyone was kind and helpful and always making projects. Now, its just not as much fun when you don't "know" anybody.

It was good whils it lasted. 8-Year-Olds took over Scratch, with using this great tool just to make chain letters, and talk to each other. A project by Doody with 100 views featuring a picture of a hamster gets 50x more attention than a game I spent a few hours working on... Sad days indeed...

After being here for so long (about 2 years) I have noticed some big changes in the popular projects and the types of people using the website. When I joined, the scratch website was featured on websites that feature tech news and articles (reddit, slashdot, digg). At this time the community had many more experience to moderately experienced programmers and many intricate projects (like tetris) were created. It seems as though most of those experienced programmers have left, probably because they just wanted to try it or found better things to do with their time. Today's community is a less mature crowd with less developed computer skills. It seems like the website is more focused on social interaction among children then making and collaborating on intricate projects. Also, this community seems much less interested in programming, as most popular projects are animations.
In light of this, what do you think of the current scratch community and what would you change about it?
Personally, I liked it better when the community was more focused on programming and testing what could be done with scratch. The current community seems just remotely interested in programming and treat scratch like another version of youtube. The frontpage has become just terrible now, with projects from the same 10 users every time and none feature interesting scripts.
What I think is we need a knew thing like you and how you created the scrolling script all of that we need ,more people doing stuff like that then users look a the scripts then the info get's pasted on we will be busy with the a new toy(I guess).
I even have noticed that I create less projects because we are running fresh out of blocks like 1.4 I noticed we got quite some projects with the block that ask questions
We need that...

I agree with everything that has been said here. I would consider myself more of a programming oriented scratcher. The projects on the front page generally don't look that interesting. They are just pictures which look pretty good, but honestly, I think Scratch could be a lot better than it is.

I am only decent at programming, but I still do my best. I try to program games, and use the skill I have, to program things. They are often not very complex, but they do have relatively good scripts, and gravity, scrolling, etc...
Also, I hate the front page right now. Projects that involve a circle for the body, a circle for the head, and straight lines for the legs, DONT DESERVE FRONT PAGE! Or projects that absolutely fail, and then people give them love its and are like 'Wow! This is so funny! I love it!'. I admit to making 1-2 projects like that, but I did not expect front page. I am fine with animations, as long as they take effort. But, what is ticking me off the most, is the 'LOVE IT GAME' projects! People just click love it, because some wannabe famous Scratcher tells them to! I am decently famous, and I am on the front page with most of my projects. And I will keep trying to promote Games and Good animations, that dont absolutely S/UCK!

They are (mostly) better at art. I only say what is true.

I've only been around for 6 months, so I don't have a very good "Taste" of what it was like back then. But when I actually started seeing the front page, it would be pointless stuff in top viewed, usually top loved would have funny animations, sometimes a good game. Top remixed is weird, usually it's just add yourself! stuff that people remix anyways, which makes me wonder why. This is 110% true Archmage, even in my short six months I have seen a lot.

This project has absolutely NOTHING that is difficult to program, in fact it is just a simple animation. However, it got featured a week or so ago.
I am thoroughly disturbed by this.As someone has previously mentioned before we should organize the front-page in three sections......
-Novice Level Programing
-Intermediate Level Programing
-Advance Level Programing
This way no matter what level of skill you are on Scratch, no one will complain. Is this a good idea?
Good idea, but it could cause a lot of trouble.
As newbies(no, I am not gonna say noobs) could be angry that they aren't on advanced part.

Seems like 07 would be a nice year for me ^_^
I like animating, but I prefer programming. Scratch is turning into a place where people often don't deserve what they have -_- I think featured is no longer a source to find great, unnoticed projects, it's now a place where you can mainly find something that shows little programming ability. Scratch is becoming to friendly to new people, and seems to be forgetting some people who have been here a long time.

Too bad there is no clear boundary like there is for pivot animation.

You guys say you all like programming over animations, but animations are all I know how to do. Your plan kinda kicks me out because I don't know how to program a platformer or something.

I only SLIGHTLY like programming over animation.

In my earlier projects, I had no idea how to use scripts, so I just did pictures and tried to figure out the scripts, so when I posted my projects, they wouldn't do anything, they would turn out as pictures X'D once i figured out how to use the scripts, I made tons of short animations! Now, for the first time, I got on the front page! And it was, of course, a game But I agree. I don't like it when there is just a picture with words above it, and sad music. Then there are "chat" galleries when you just chat in the comments XD people should save that for facebook and twitter.

I'm aware that this topic is old.
But yeah, I agree. I've only been around for almost 2 years and I've noticed the change. I registered, and there was a nice little community of people on the forums. People spammed "Show and Tell" with random topics. Then "the other forums" were made, and people chatted more than they programmed. I enjoy programming, but I hate to say I've contributed a little to the social side of things.
