Well you do know what it is. It's potassium nitrate.

Doesn't he mean silver nitrate?

Re: I am truly a Geek-Proof

I am talking about silver nitrate, not potassium nitrate.

Potassium is not explosive itself, but if you mix potassium nitrate with sulfur and charcoal you'll get black powder.
And copper wires aren't very good for detonators due to the low resistance (if you use a short wire there will be a short circuit), I use nichrome wire for my detonators.

Hmmm. But isn't Potassium with the alkaline metals? I know some of those will explode/catch on fire just from contact with air.

Perhaps you are thinking of sodium. Pure sodium reacts with air moisture and can catch on fire.  tongue

Yes, I know that, potassium is in the same group as soduim. It make be less active, I havn't taken chem since last year.

Re: I am truly a Geek-Proof

.......that may look cool....but...think bout how much that could cost.....1 reg chem set is bout 100-200 US Dollars....and i mean a good quality one not those cheap platics thingies wherre you buy at walmart or somethin lolz....

Also when you start you use the set can you record yourself? Lol if you made a mistake and made an explosion and it cuaght on tape then you can upload it on youtube and maybe become famous...lolz just a suggestion..

Happy New Year!

Re: I am truly a Geek-Proof

I don't really care that much about explosions... but I love rocket science. I don't like destruction, I like creation... I want to make a methanol-oxygen fuel cell or something. Or an electromagnetic payload propulsion system.

here is an idea for a 'greener' space system:

use a gigantic electromagnetic gun (with a smaller, but still existant chemical booster) for the payload equipment that is allowed to go through G-Forces that would be lethally high for humans. It would shoot out extremely fast and then be maneuvered into LEO. Then, it would be set up and have a status report, and when it is good, another rocket would go out, also propelled at first by the electromagnetic gun, but at lower velocities to limit G-Forces. Or it could take off like an airplane at first, then refuel from a balloon high up and lift into orbit. Either way, it would take a lot less fuel since the craft would only be carrying an astronaut payload, with some life support and fuel tanks, but for the balloon thing, less fuel because of the refueling in the air. Then, while in orbit, the two craft would perform a rondezvous and the crew would go into the larger space payload transfer "bullet", which could be transformed into a livable structure, perhaps even a spaceship. Then, the crew ship (more plane-shaped) would be flown back down to earth, maybe by autopilot, maybe by a pilot. This is just an idea to add to the bank of innovation...

Re: I am truly a Geek-Proof

I'm easily as smart as a geek, but I'm not one of those lame self proclaimed geeks who actually believe it's cool to be one.

No offense intended to anyone but I didn't read any of the posts in here, and when I scrolled up I saw a bunch of these.
