I am truly a Geek-Proof

http://www.thamesandkosmos.com/products … 30002.html That's what I am getting for my birthday. I think this is as geeky as it gets. Seriously, monomers and polymers?

Re: I am truly a Geek-Proof

Wow, that's like a mini laboratory in a box. I didn't even know they sell those things in that commercial manner. Now if you can also convince your family members to toss in a couple of burets, a spectrophotometer, and some distillation and reflux glassware...  big_smile

I love electrochemistry, and of course 'normal' chemistry  smile

Re: I am truly a Geek-Proof

Lets see what this kit comes with:
Potassium- Explosive
Another Potassium-More Explosive
One more Potasium-MORE EXPLOSIONS!!!
Tartric acid-Bubly stuff. Wash hands after using.
Magnesium-Lets build flares...
Copper Wire-Detonaters anyone?
Sulfur-Smelly, may be toxic
Many other compunds that I don't know of-MORE EXPLOSIONS!!!

Have fun with that.  smile

Potassium is not explosive itself, but if you mix potassium nitrate with sulfur and charcoal you'll get black powder.
And copper wires aren't very good for detonators due to the low resistance (if you use a short wire there will be a short circuit), I use nichrome wire for my detonators.

Hmmm. But isn't Potassium with the alkaline metals? I know some of those will explode/catch on fire just from contact with air.
Oh well,  at least I know how to make black powder now. I can use that for my evil plans.  tongue
I am more of a physics guy, so I can't think of all these compounds off the top of my head.
Wait, you have detonators? o_O

I don't know about the alkaline metals...
And if you're making black powder BE VERY CAREFUL IT CAN EASILY DETONATE. I RECOMMEND YOU NOT TO MAKE IT!

And I have home built detonator made with resistance wires, and I have disassembled an RC car and made the detonator radio controlled  big_smile

Lol, I was kidding about the black powder. Although it may be useful in my plan to build a tennis ball cannon and shoot it at my friends yard...Nah.

A friend a I built a small cannon with potassium nitrate (KNO3) and sugar, it worked awesome!
If you're building a cannon, the walls of the pipe must be REALLY thick.

I will keep that in mind. Prbably won't do it until this summer though.

Perhaps you are thinking of sodium. Pure sodium reacts with air moisture and can catch on fire.  tongue

Re: I am truly a Geek-Proof

The reason they don't include potassium nitrate is because it comes with an alcohol burner and silver nitrate. Silver nitrate is dangerous in the hands of me...someone who has no idea what it is.

I don't so that's pretty dangerous. I do know that when you mix it with other stuff, it make boom!

Well you do know what it is. It's potassium nitrate.
