What's the point of email forum syntax if it's removed?

On numerous occasions I have used the email syntax on the forums, only to have it removed by moderators. Isn't it there to allow users to contact you by email? Besides, I'm not even giving out my email, I'm giving out the streak email. And that is easily available on the streak website, conveniently linked to in my signature, on every one of my posts.
So, to get to the real question: why remove email links?
If it is added by the user, I think that that signifies that they accept that it is not open to the world to see. Also, 9/10 times I've seen an email link (or a removed one) it is simply one user offering to help another user through some sort of file/sensitive information transfer that the forums themselves do not allow. Shouldn't we be encouraging this sort of help?
I leave this thread open to suggestions, opinions, and feedback about this. Also, it would be appreciated if a moderator would reply as to anything that, maybe, they were told to do that involves removing emails for a perfectly good reason.
And, um, if you prefer other online collaboration methods to this forum, you can email me here: [removed by moderator]. (He casually slips in at the end)...

Now that you bring it up, it makes no sense at all.

I'm taking a break from Scratch until 2.0 comes out. Any messages sent between then and now probably won't be read - sorry.

Since a large portion of the users of this site are children, we think it is important for the safety of this group that communications be kept public as much as possible.  That is why we discourage the sharing of email addresses.

I see. Would it then be possible to allow file sharing over the forums, so that emails for the sole purpose of attaching a file can also be kept public?
Obviously, file types should be restricted to images, scratch projects, sprites, text files, and maybe videos and RTF, plus any other 'safe' ones.
